An Inexpensive Party Food or Everyday Snack
This People Puppy Chow recipe is another of my Easy Kid Recipes, and it is a snack that you and your kids will enjoy making over and over. This treat is quick and fun to make, and it is good to eat, too. This fun mix has been called by many other names such as: Muddy Buddies, Puppy Chow, Trash, and Monkey Munch.
So, whether you are having a party or just having friends over for a game night, it is the perfect treat for nibbling. This inexpensive snack also makes a tasty gift to give for any occasion. And if you need something for a bake sale, then simply package it in single serve portions, and it is a real moneymaker.
CAUTION: Do not feed this to a puppy or to your full-grown dog because this food item is for people. It contains chocolate, which will make your dog very sick.
5th Recipe in the Easy Kid Recipes Series
Let's gather the ingredients needed to make some People Puppy Chow:Credit: Southerngirl09
¼ cup butter or margarine (1/2 of a full stick of butter)
½ cup peanut butter, creamy style
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
9 cups Rice Chex cereal
2 - 3 cups Confectioners sugar
Items you'll need to make this recipe:
Measuring cup – 1 cup size
Measuring cup – 1/2 cup size
Medium size microwave safe glass bowl
Large size bowl for the cereal
Large tablespoon for stirring the topping
Large cooking spoon for mixing the topping and the cereal together
Measuring spoon – teaspoon size
Spatula for dipping peanut butter and for scraping the bowl
2 plastic bags with a zippered top
Wax paper, parchment paper, or jelly roll pan
Using the 1 cup size measuring cup, measure the cereal, and place it into the large bowl. An easy way to do this is to cut the top off the bag of cereal using a pair of scissors, and then you can scoop out the cereal using the measuring cup.
Today, I am making this chow snack with Rice Chex cereal, but it can also be made using Corn Chex cereal or Crispix cereal.
You will notice when you take out the stick of butter or margarine that there are markings on the paper wrapper. Typically, these marks indicate several different measurements: Tablespoons, a ¼ cup measurement, a 1/3 cup measurement, and a ½ cup measurement. Since we are using ¼ cup of butter, use the table knife to simply cut the stick in half, put the other half on your butter dish, and place it in the refrigerator. Now, cut the butter into 4 or 5 chunks, and place these chunks into a microwave safe bowl. Save the butter paper wrapper for the next step.
Before measuring the peanut butter, use the inside of the butter wrapper to grease the inside of the measuring cup, which will allow the peanut butter to come out easier. Dip enough peanut butter to fill the ½ cup measuring cup, and then empty it on top of the butter in the glass bowl.
Using the 1 cup size measuring cup again, measure the chocolate chips, and sprinkle them on top of the peanut butter in the bowl.
Place the bowl with the topping mix into the microwave. Heat on 50% power for about 30 seconds, take the bowl out of the microwave, and stir. Repeat the heating and stirring until the mixture is thoroughly melted, and all the ingredients are blended together. My bowl was not hot – but always use caution when something could be hot.
Next, measure the vanilla in the teaspoon measuring spoon, add it to the topping mix, and stir until it is mixed in completely.
In a circling pattern, pour the topping over the cereal. Using the spatula, scrape all the remaining topping from the bowl, add it to the cereal bowl, and then stir until all the pieces are covered.
Once all the pieces have been coated with the topping mix, divide the snack mixture between the two bags. Measure 1 cup of Confectioners sugar for each bag, and pour it on top of the snack, seal the bags tightly, and shake. If needed, more Confectioners sugar can be added to each bag.
Spread the puppy chow out on wax paper, parchment paper, or onto a large jelly roll pan, and allow it to cool. Once it has cooled, spoon it into bowls to be stored in the refrigerator until it is time for it to be served.
Cleanup time can be rewarding; after all, someone needs to lick all those spoons before they are put into the dishwasher. And don’t forget to put everything else away, and wipe off the countertops where you worked. Good Job!
