How to Make Toad in the Hole

My family likes link sausages, and one of my favorite ways to serve them is in this easy sausage casserole, using my easy “Toad in a Hole Recipe.” While I consider this a breakfast dish, I typically prepare it for dinner. But whether you are preparing it for a breakfast meal or a dinner meal, you will want to have some maple syrup handy to drizzle over the toads in the holes – it tastes just like sausage and pancakes. YUM!

I have shared with you how good this easy sausage casserole is, so now, let’s talk about how much fun this dish is. Kids love it! First of all, they get excited about the name. But the excitement only heightens as they watch the toads as they rise while cooking, and watch again, as they sink down in their holes when the dish comes out of the oven. You have captured their imagination, and now they will be interested in eating this exciting dish. And more than likely, they will want you to make it again and again.

Historically, toad in the hole is an English food that dates back hundreds of years. It was a way to stretch small amounts of meat, possibly leftover pieces, by using a batter. It is usually served with onion gravy, along with mashed potatoes and/or other sides.[1] My adaptation of their dish follows.

Let's gather the ingredients needed to make this Easy Sausage Casserole:

1 pound link sausage (pork or turkey)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1 cup milk
½ tsp. salt
*1 tbsp. vegetable oil

Let's Cook

Cooked Link Sausages

I used Jimmy Dean Fully Cooked Turkey Sausage Links, today, for this recipe. Since these sausages are fully cooked, they only need to be reheated (heating directions are on the package). *Use the 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, listed above, to grease (bottom and sides) of a 10-inch oven safe casserole pan. (The oil is to help keep the sausage and batter from sticking to the pan.)


If you will be using uncooked pork sausage links, then allow extra time to cook them, so they will be thoroughly done. And if you are using a stove top and oven safe casserole pan for cooking the pork links, then you will probably not need the tablespoon of oil to grease the pan, since the raw sausage you are cooking will probably render enough grease for cooking the casserole.

Either way, the well-greased (bottom and sides) 10-inch casserole pan needs to be placed in a 400-degree oven just long enough to heat the pan.

Making Batter for Easy Sausage Casserole


Measure and mix the flour and salt in a mixing bowl (medium size), and make a well in the center. Add the eggs and milk to the flour, and using a mixer, mix well.

Pouring Batter Over the Cooked Sausages


Once the pan has been heated, remove the pan from the oven, quickly arrange the cooked sausages in the pan, pour the batter over the sausages, and return the pan to the 400-degree oven. Cook about 30 minutes or until the batter is golden brown.

Then, just cut, serve, and enjoy a sit down meal with the family.

Thats incredible you or I must be psychic. We had a male friend pop in to night just before tea and we were talking about old type cooking. And I said to him do you remember the yorkshire pudding. And he laughed and then he mentioned the steamed puddings and I said what about toad in the hole. We used to have that often as kids and I have made it too.
Simple easy to make meals. Great article I just thought it so funny that we mentioned it and here it is on IB. Thanks for sharing this.
