Eating Properly with Healthy Foods for Athletes
When the goal is to keep in top physical condition, eating properly is as important as working out. This means making food choices that will support that exercise regimen and help keep the body chugging along properly. An athlete, sports person, or all active people for that matter are in need of more nutrients and calories than those that don't exercise on a regular basis. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing healthy eating habits.
One important thing to keep in mind is that green is always right, assuming that the green is the original color of the food. As both raw and cooked options, green vegetables are often packed with vitamins and nutrients, are easy for the body to digest, and usually contain very little in the way of carbohydrates and cholesterol, two of the main health issues in our society today. When selecting green options as part of an eating healthy diet, don't feel limited to salad greens. Kale, collards, turnip greens, and mustard greens are all leafy options for cooking. While you are at it, do not forget green beans, Brussel Sprouts, and asparagus.
Along with green vegetables, make sure to include seafood in your list of healthy eating food. Often loaded with Omega 3 properties that help to prevent the buildup of cholesterol in the system, fish are also an excellent source of protein. In fact, chicken and seafood are should be essential parts of the diet of healthy food for athletes, as they contain more of what you need to be active.
When it comes to liquids, natural is always better. Keep hydrated with plenty of water. Green tea is also an excellent choice, as well as fresh squeezed fruit juices. Avoid carbonated drinks, such as sodas. If you must have a soda, then make sure it is a low calorie one at least, and limit the number to no more than a few a week. Keep the alcohol to a minimum as well. Healthy eating diets includes the liquids, so make sure what goes in will at least not cause problems.
