No matter where you live in the world chances are your country devotes a special holiday to celebrate mothers. In Argentina, Mother's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in October. In honor of Queen Sirikit, Thailand celebrates Mother's day on August 12th, the queen's birthday. In the United States and the majority of the other countries, Mother's Day is on the 2nd Sunday in May. So, if you don't have a gift in mind, consider some of these eco-friendly options to celebrate your mother and Mother Earth.
Buy a gift she can reuse
Forget the balloons that will be gone by next week, get mom something that she will use and that will last. Does she like to drink coffee? How about a reusable coffee mug? Don't settle for chain store ground coffee, if there's a local coffee company in your area, grab a few flavors to add to the reusable coffee mug. Does she have reusable grocery bags, but always forgets them in the car or at home? Get her reusable grocery bags that fold or bundle up neatly so she can keep them in her purse.

If your mom loves flowers, consider purchasing them at a local farmer's market. Better yet, get her an orchid or succulents. Orchids and succulents are beautiful, will last much longer than fresh-cut flowers and don't require much water or attention. Does your mom love to cook? Consider buying a pot of fresh herbs she can keep in her kitchen. She might even make you a delicious meal with the herbs! Build your own local food and wine basket. Some items you could fill the basket with are local honey, cheeses, dried fruits, wine, and cured meats.
Make a donation in your mom's name
Does your mother support a local or national charity? If your mother is an amazing breast cancer survivor, consider making a donation in her name to a foundation that contributes to breast cancer research. If she loves dogs, think about donating to the local pet shelter.
Spend time with your mother
If your mother is anything like mine, all she really wants is to spend some time with you. So, if your mother loves the outdoors, take her hiking, sailing, surfing, or bike riding. Has she always wanted to learn how to salsa dance? Many salsa clubs offer a free lesson before club hours. You can take a free class and practice what you learn with her! If she loves food, take her to a farmer's market and pick out items for a food and wine basket with her. Does she love animals? Think about volunteering at an animal shelter for a day. Is there a local non-profit that organizes beach clean-ups? How about a food bank or homeless shelter that serves Mother's Day lunch? Think of things she likes to do and do them with her.
No matter what you decide to do for your mom on Mother's Day make sure it comes from the heart and doesn't go to waste! Have other ideas? Leave a comment, I would love to hear them!
