Too much of everything is bad for you. The same is true with drinking too much alcohol, and it will likely give you a hangover the next day. Coupled with a throbbing headache and a sick stomach, a hangover makes our mornings miserable when we wake up and probably will last the entire day. Hangovers are direct consequences of the chemical process of alcohol metabolism; the more alcohol that we drink, the more severe the hangover will be.
Here are some effective hangover cures and remedies that will rid the uncomfortable feeling away:
Drink lots of water
Alcohol is a diuretic. It induces frequent urination which indirectly leads to dehydration of our body. Hangover symptoms like nausea, vomiting and a dry mouth are direct results of dehydration. Drinking lots of water before going to bed and after waking up replenishes our body fluids, therefore lessening the hangover symptoms.
Take Vitamin C
Having a hangover may leave you weak and tired. Vitamin C helps in releasing your body's stored energy that you will need for the rest of the day, especially if you haven't eaten yet. This is not an immediate hangover cure or remedy, but this seems to work fairly effective.
Take a hot bath
The water's heat helps your body to sweat, therefore releasing through your skin the toxins and impurities caused by alcohol metabolism in your body. Alcohol impurities cause also the headache that you feel when you have a hangover.
Drink a moderate amount of coffee
Coffee will alleviate the nauseating feeling in your head, but it could worsen your hangover because the caffeine in the coffee is a diuretic which also contributes to dehydration. Drink coffee in moderate amounts only.
Eat fructose-rich fruits like bananas
When you drink alcohol, you lose potassium and sugar in the form of fructose. These minerals are essential to maintain healthy body functions. Bananas are considered also as a natural antacid which alleviates the vomiting feeling in the stomach. It is also rich in magnesium which helps relax the blood vessels, thereby lessening the throbbing headache in our head.
Complement water with Powerade or Gatorade
Sports drinks replenish some minerals and fluids that we lose during drinking. These sports drinks rehydrate our body fast and also provide energy to a hangover-weakened body. A single bottle of Gatorade or Powerade would be enough; you just have to complement it with drinking lots of water.
There are other suggested hangover cures and remedies. However, the ones enumerated are some of the most basic and effective ways in curing hangovers. At least try one, or a combination of two or more remedies enumerated herein to alleviate the hangover symptoms when you feel these in the future.
