Effects or problems of egoism

By Edited Jan 6, 2014 1 4

Actually understanding egoism is very complex compared to other human emotions. This is because ego is not an emotion at all.

Then what exactly is ego ?
It cannot be understood unless its effects are considered.

Ego is a term generally used to distinguish a person who always speaks in self-appreciation.

Then what does the term egoist mean ?
Simply, those persons who find pride in boosting about themselves and about their own achievements are egoist.

Ego is a peculiar human characteristic centered o the attitude where self or "I" is given all the undue importance.

Egoist bestow ultimate value to one's own happiness, usually accompanied by an inflated sense of self-pride.

How do we readily verify ourselves whether we are egoistic or not ?
A vital sign of being egositic is that one finds pleasure in hurting others' feelings and praising oneself.

And conversely people get easily hurt when a bad remark is passed against them even if the remark is actually a true fact.

Ego is the behavior arising out of deeply embedded feelings like mentioned below

  • I'm great
  • My Knowledge is correct
  • Everyone should listen to me
  • I can do everything
  • Everyone should praise me
  • I can make the rules

There might be conflicts with above points but are certainly the main characteristics of egoist person.

Egoist person gives highest precedence to his own happiness

Effects or problems of egoism

  • Egoism takes the form of pride and vanity.
  • It leads to arrogance.
  • Ego damages relationships
  • It also has consequences on finacial aspects
  • It creates the bad habit of changing one's behavior.
  • Egoists avoid associations with people who could be threat to their self pride.
  • One may not be able to concentrate on tasks and activities
  • One may get agitated and even offensive.

Thus, egosim is clearly a disastrous force and hence ways should be sought for its eradication.

What causes egoism ?

The thought of "I" is the source of egoism.
It is only after its emergence that the rest of effects follow.

As long as ego persists, body is given all the importance and as long as the ideas that "I am the body",I am important" exists, egoism will continue to be part of us.

Most important of the things we could lose due to ego is relationship.
Somehow such a loss is often ignored because the importance of relationship is never realized untill it is lost.

Therefore our ego is an enemy that resides within us,motivating us on the negative path.

Unless there are certain alterations in one's fundamental concepts such as self-control,freedom,will,relations the problem of shedding ego becomes impossible.

Having self pride is acceptable but shouldn't go beyond the limit which is on its way to destroy us.
