Epoxy Based Garage Floor Coatings Work Great

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

If you have a garage I am sure it probably has a few stains from dripping oil and maybe a few chips in the surface. If you are tired of how this looks I have a great do-it-yourself project for you to consider. It will make the floor look great, it will protect it, and it will even make it safer. Why don't you consider applying an epoxy garage floor coating one of these weekends?

Garage floor coatings have been around for years but mostly they have been applied in professional garages and truck shops. These industrial systems are usually installed in order to protect the concrete subfloor and to improve the safety by decreasing the number of slips and falls. By applying a floor coating to your garage you will accomplish these two functions plus you will improve the looks dramatically if you choose to color the coating with paint chips.

Epoxies are very hard once they cure but they are easy to work with and apply. Once the floor is cleaned and prepped you just mix the resin with the hardener and then spread it out on the floor using a nap roller. It is just like painting your floor. It takes about 24 hours to walk on and about 3 days till it reaches maximum hardness but then it will withstand most abuse including welding sparks.

Before the epoxy cures you can sprinkle some gritty material, usually sand, over the surface and this will drastically reduce the slickness of the floor. The sand roughs up the surface and makes your shoes "stick" and not slide. It is not so rough as to cause a problem though as you can still broom it for clean up and even roll a creeper under your car. Applying a non-slip garage floor coating can make your weekend projects much safer.

Lastly, adding color chips can really make your garage snap. Industrial grey used to be the only color available but now about anything under the rainbow is available. When you mix the resin and hardener just sprinkle in paint chips to get the color consistency you want.

If you are looking for an improvement project for your garage then look into this weekend improvement. You can buy the kit at a home improvement store and they will even give you pointers on applying it in your area as temperature and humidity must be taken into account if they are extreme.
