Ericksonian Hypnosis
When we take a closer look on the hypnosis, we do not fail to note the fact that hypnosis has remained long under the burden of misconceptions and its use was very limited. It was the work of the modern studies which have succeeded to bring hypnosis to its rightful position. The current fame of hypnosis is certainly indebted to Milton Erickson for his contribution to bring hypnosis to its actual deserving place. Ericksonian hypnosis, as we can call, opened new doors to use and get the enormous benefits of hypnosis.
Milton Erickson, born in 1902 and lived in a rural area, had limited education and was suffering from color blindness, dyslexic and got affected by polio at the age of 17. While helpless to walk, he had to stay on the chair without physical activities but his mind remained highly active and creative. At this inert state, he used his mental powers and fully concentrated on visualizing as if he is walking and playing outside. He also got inspired by his baby sister as how she learned to walk. He kept building a strong picture of himself doing all what was impossible in that condition. At a subsequent stage, he was practically able to move and walk. This visualization technique became the basis of Ericksonian hypnosis which is now benefiting a lot.
Ericksonian hypnosis involves indirect suggestions, unlike the traditional hypnosis where the hypnotist used to give direct commands to the patient or subject. In Ericksonian hypnosis, both the story telling and inducing the sleep-like state are employed to bring the patient or subject into the desired state of hypnosis.
During the Ericksonian hypnosis process and story telling, a certain theme is repeated so that the subconscious mind can pick up the subtle targeted message. The rate of success of Ericksonian hypnosis is highly encouraging and contributing to attract more and more people towards the great benefits of hypnosis. Some athletes are employing Ericksonian hypnosis techniques and their rate of success is amazingly high.
The approach of Ericksonian hypnosis differs in many ways with the traditional method of hypnosis. The way the hypnosis state of hypnosis sleep is induced, the techniques, giving the targeted suggestions and the way the subject is made to react, all have some differences. The secret of Ericksonian hypnosis is its indirect suggesting style. Indirect suggestions are less prone to face resistance as the subject will not notice that certain suggestions are being given to him or her. Once the indirect suggestions are repeatedly given to the subject, his or her mind unconsciously would respond to the suggestions which are implanted indirectly in the subconscious mind.
