Essay Writing for Dummies

By Edited Aug 28, 2015 0 0

Congratulations on taking the first step to getting into college! The college admissions essay is the one thing that can really set you apart from other applicants, however it is not something you get a lot of help in writing. Let me give you a few tips that really worked for me and what I still use today whenever I advise someone how to write the best college essay. I bet once you read these tips you will realize that you have been on the right track all along and you just needed a little push in the right direction.

1. Start Brainstorming

I know I know – ever since you were a kid this is what you were told. Well this is no different. Put the pen to paper and just freely jot down everything you would like to get across about yourself. This is a great way to make sure you do not leave anything about yourself out. You can worry about location and formatting later – now is the time to write, write, write.

2. Be Accurate

Whether it is using a statistic, a famous quote or simply showing off your knowledge about their school, it is so important to make sure you have your facts straight before you proceed. Check and recheck your sources and make sure you are using recent and reliable information.

3. Tell the Truth

Whatever you do, do not try to make yourself out to be something you are not. If the school does not like you for you, then they are the wrong school. Imagine trying to make yourself sound like you have travelled more or done more academically only to arrive to your interview and not be able to remember what you put in your essay. Honesty is always going to be the best policy.

4. Add a Personal Touch

College admissions officers read thousands upon thousands of essays each year. In order for you to stand out, you will have to make them feel as though they really know you. Tell about your life experiences and how those make you a good candidate for admission or tell them about the first time you dreamt of attending their school.

5. No Procrastinating

Make sure you do not leave this process until the last minute. Yes, there is a final deadline, but you really want to give your admissions officers a good head start on reading your admissions essay. Plus, you will not be able to do adequate brainstorming if you wait until the end to do your essay.

These tips are simple and easy-to-follow. If you can implement this simple five-step list then you will be off to a great start on your college admissions essay.

Good luck!
