In 2004, acai berry became the years biggest news in weight loss. Supplements flew off the shelf to help people loose weight, all naturally. Some companies even claimed that well known celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Rachel Ray, and Dr. Oz claimed that acai was a miracle weight loss aid. However, the celebrities didn't make these claims and there were a lot of questions left behind in the wake of the acai berry supplement excitement. You can still get acai berry on the shelf and it still has a lot of claims, but what do you really need to know about acai berry?


What is Acai Berry?

The acai berry grows in the rainforests of Amazon and other areas of Central and South America. They come from the acai palm and are about an inch long. They have a deep red to purple color.

Acai berries are full of anthocyanins and flavonoids. Both of these are powerful antioxidants that are good for the body. Studies have shown that these antioxidants (and others) reduce the signs of aging and reduces the risk of several diseases. This is because the antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

All these antioxidants have been shown to reduce heart disease, cancer, and even aid in weight loss. They are also supposed to keep your brain working well, giving you more energy, and allowing you to get better sleep. It is supposed to detoxify the body, improve digestion, and create healthy skin. It is even supposed to make the immune system stronger.

Here's where things get complicated. All berries have all of these benefits. However, they aren't some miracle where you start consuming the supplements and you change your entire life. Instead, you should have a diet that includes berries regularly. Acai berries are great, but they aren't a miracle.

The acai berry scam includes a lot more than just the supplements might not work. First of all, there are a number of names that have been attached to the acai berry weight loss that just isn't true. Oprah Winfrey, Rachel Ray, and Dr. Oz have never said anything about acai berry working wonders. Their names have been used all over and they aren't really very happy about it.

The final issue with acai berry scams is that some companies have offered a free trial. They take your credit card information and say that you can cancel after the free trial. Then they struggle to get it canceled are often charged as much as $90 a month for the products.


Acai Berry Weight Loss

The most popular form of acai berry is the acai berry for weight loss. These are supplements in a variety of forms that claim that you can lose a lot of weight by taking the supplements. Many of them suggest you will lose a lot of weight in a short period of time while also feeling great. You don't need to diet or to exercise. You just need to take the supplements.

Here's the truth. There is no information on these supplements. There is no proof that they are any better than any other berry. There is also no proof that the supplements will even offer the same benefits the the fruit itself offers.


Dried Acai Berries

There are a lot of different products that are sold as acai berry cleanses. Many of them have a lot of other ingredients that are added to it and the goal is to cleanse the body of toxins. This is the newest form that the acai berry marketers have taken and the cleanse product usually says that it will cause you to lose weight, get a flatter stomach, and have more energy. All of these are great things, none of them are supported by research. Many times there is no guarantee and you are simply out whatever money you spent. There are a huge number of cleanses out there, so it isn't like you need to spend a whole lot of money if you want to do a cleanse (there's even an apple cider vinegar cleanse and you can get that really cheap).

You also want to make sure that you know what else is in the product if you decide that it is worth a try. Some ingredients can be dangerous, especially when taken in large amounts.


Acai Berry Supplements

There are no known acai berry side effects. However, there are side effects to some ingredients in some products. These include allergic reactions, stomach cramps, diarrhea, sickness, and headaches. Each of these vary from person to person, but you should really know that some acai berry supplements can make you feel horrible.  

Acai berry has also beed added to a lot of different products which may very well be good and good for you. One example is one of the many acai berry teas which have tea and acai berry in them, both loaded with antioxidants.

In the end, what you really need to know about acai berry can be summed up pretty easily.

  • Acai berry is a great berry and if you like it and have access to it then you should eat them.
  • Acai berry isn't more of a superfood than blueberries, raspberries, or cranberries.
  • Acai berry doesn't do all that some promise. While studies show that antioxidants are good for a lot of things including weight loss, it isn't a miracle and won't have you dropping a ton of weight.
  • Acai berry cleanse is the newest crazy. You can cleanse a lot of ways if you feel its necessary, but acai berry doesn't do it in a way that is amazing.
  • Acai berry supplements can be dangerous because you don't know what's in them or how you'll react to it.  

In the end, acai berry isn't something I would recommend unless you are eating the actual berries. Then I wouldn't recommend eating more of them than other types of berries. On the other hand, some South American cultures consume a diet that's 40 to 50% acai berry. So, they are safe for you to consume. I wouldn't recommend the supplements at all.
