Having the responsibility over a class full of young students is a big responsibility. Keeping them quiet can be just as hard as making them sit still. Maybe exercise balls in classroom can be a solution for these type of problems.

As a student I know what it means to lose attention. I also know what it is means to have the constant urge to move, to resit and just stretch your arm a little bit or something like it.

When you look at working places of people, there is a big uprise of the exercise balls, or stability balls, most of all because it allows you to do core exercises for lower back pain. Because people sit on a ball instead of a relaxing chair, you need to put tension to your muscles all the time. This is just one of the typical workouts for lower back. But kids don't have lower back pain, still a good idea?

Because the children have to focus better on how they sit, they tend to sit less relaxed. This results in sitting up straight, sitting up straight is known to be good for the concentration of the children.

The Posture of the Child

Most of the lower back problems come on a late age, but they have their origin in the early years of somebody their life. If you are getting used to sit sloppy, to be all relaxed and have an arched back all the time, your back is growing that way. So having a good posture early in life will result in a better posture later in life.

With an exercise ball you can work on this posture, do some stability ball exercises in the classroom and you will find effect. There are a lot of exercise ball core workouts in order to increase the strength of the back of the child, which results in a better posture overall, including when they are just walking around.

As said, students tend to resit all the time. Because they sit on a ball now they will move around just a little bit all the time. This little movement results in more attention, as you are not distracted anymore because you want to resit.

Also, these little movements result in more attention. Just think of it, when somebody is listening with a lot of attention to you, are they moving around? With their hands for instance? Or do they sit completely still. Moving around is good for the attention on a subject.

Concluding thoughts

When you are in front of a classroom whole day, you know the problems you can face with the children. Some exercise balls in classroom won't solve them all, but they will work in your advantage. Aside from that, you are thinking ahead and you give the children a better way to sit, the complete day. But most of all, it is fun to sit on such an exercise ball, because you can bounce around all the time, while you are still listening to what the teacher is telling you!
