As the heat
waves start rolling, it can be tempting to abandon any fitness pursuits
and just lounge around while enjoying the A/C. Unfortunately, while
the latter option is quite tempting, it will not help you get fitter
and healthier. Lounging around is also not that much of a fun compared
to a pickup game of basketball or beach volleyball.
If you intend
to continue with your exercises during the summer, it'll help a lot
if you know some key fitness tips that can help you against the heat.
Heat can melt fat and make you sweat faster than most weight loss pills
sold in licensed online drugstores but, it can also lead to heat stroke
and related health problems. Beat the summer heat while keeping fit
with the following exercise tips:
- Pace your
exercises until you get accustomed to the weather.
If you
are used to exercising indoors or during cooler weathers, you might
want to take it slow with summer activities to give your body time to
get used to the change in temperature. As your body adapts to the heat,
you can gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts
and exercises. However, if you have a chronic medical condition or take
medications, ask your doctor if you need to take additional precautions.
- Keep yourself
hydrated at all times.
It's
easy to forget to take a swig of water once the game starts but it is
important that you keep yourself hydrated while exercising. Keep in
mind that you lose bodily fluids while you are sweating and those need
to get replaced. Sports drinks are especially recommended if you are
going for longer and more intensive workouts. Aside from keeping your
body hydrated, drinking fluids can help your body cool down to prevent
heat-related health problems.
- Dress coolly
and comfortably.
While
it is wise to wear clothes that protect most of your skin from sun exposure,
being all covered up can keep your body temperature from going down
in hot weather. If you do need to cover up, opt for lightweight, loose-fitting
clothing in light colors to facilitate sweat evaporation which is necessary
to keep you cool. Light colors also help deflect heat instead of absorbing
it like dark ones do.
- Avoid going
out during the hottest times of the day.
The
sun's rays are at their hottest and most dangerous between 10am and
4pm. As such it is best to schedule any workout, exercise, or game you
want to do in the early morning or late afternoon. If scheduling is
not possible such as in the case of pickup games, then at least try
to play indoors. Wearing sunscreen is also an added protection.
- Have a backup
exercise plan.
If the
heat is really bad but you still want to exercise, it pays to have a
backup workout plan ready. But given that the heat and the temperature
are really soaring, it is best to keep any exercise indoors. Walking
around the mall, climbing stairs, and working in the gym are some of
the best alternatives to outdoor exercise during a heat wave.
