Exploring Yorkshire
Places to see and explore in Yorkshire
The north of England is one of the most beautiful areas of the world in my opinion with stunning scenery and a great relaxed atmosphere. The county boasts fantastic national parks, a beautiful coastline and a wealth of intriguing history and splendid cities. With that in mind I thought I’d delve deeper into the beautiful Yorskire and share some of the things to do in Yorkshire that you absolutely can’t miss.
The countryside is the biggest draw for most travellers to Yorkshire so it seems like an apt place to start our foray. We’ll start with the infamous Yorkshire Dales which are a national park in the middle of Yorkshire. These rolling hills are scattered with paths, trails and quiet out of the way rural communities that are perfect for exploring. The Dales are beautiful all year round and in the summer the hills come alive with birds and beautiful sun. Yorkshire cottages make up large parts of each village with beautiful surroundings and an abundance of fantastic rural pubs with a distinctly local Yorkshire charm. However, Yorkshire is not just the Dales and the North Moors national park in the east of the country is equally splendid and much less agricultural. The North Moors offer fantastic views across the North Sea and you can explore fantastic ruins and beautiful surroundings at your leisure. Beyond these sprawling parks you have the beautiful Yorkshire coastline to explore with its incredible estuaries, secluded beaches, craggy cliffs and seafront towns. The seaside towns are perfect for anyone travelling with their family and provide a welcome break for sun, sea and sand set in some truly British classic seaside resorts.
Beyond the countryside Yorkshire has a rich history to explore and some beautiful cities. York is an absolute must for all visitors and is one of the most impressively well preserved medieval cities in the country. The city still boasts its impressive fortifications and plays host to York Minster; one of the most amazing Gothic churches in the world. Exploring the shambles and the tiny cobbled streets around the city is an incredible experience whilst you can visit the museum and the castle remains for a great day out. Further afield York offers a stunning array of stately homes, castles and other ruins to explore. Raby castle and Bolton castle are well worth exploring whilst Sewerby hall and the renowned Fairfax house are beautiful examples of English heritage and luxury living in eras gone by. Whitby abbey is considered one of the most romantic locations in the country thanks to its beautiful location on the moors looking out into the sea and the surrounding beautiful cliffs. The Abbey is largely ruined now but it is still a gorgeous place to visit. Further down the coast you can visit the incredibly important town of Scarborough with its rich fishing culture and vibrant arts scene.
In terms of places to stay cottages in Yorkshire offer great value for money with easy access to most of the sights – perfect for groups and families. However, there are plenty of hotels and B&B’s and tons of camping grounds so you’ll easily be able to find something suitable for your needs and tastes. I’d recommend staying along the coast besides the North Moor simply for the beaches and the fantastic landscapes.

If visiting Whitby, don't forget that much of Bram Stoker's Dracula was set there.
