Extreme Constipation: Causes and Treatment

The condition referred to as extreme constipation is distinguished as being chronic and severe. Individuals suffer greatly and not just physically. Their bowel movement is often limited to only one bathroom trip a week. The discomfort can even affect a person's social, personal and professional aspects. As compared to other sufferers of the condition, those who experience the extreme aspects of it should seek the advice of a medical professional.

For instance, patients with kidney problems should not take laxatives. Laxatives also affect how the body absorbs nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium. Excessive use can also cause the bones to weaken. Like an addictive drug, excessive use can cause the intestines to be accustomed to its effect. Certain types of medications also cause constipation. These include pain killers, antacids and supplements that contain iron.

Often times, constipation is a sign that the body is not getting enough liquids. With stools that are hard and dry, this indicates that all of the moisture is being absorbed back into the body. Individuals are advised to drink at least 8 glasses of water, fruit juices or soups in order to hydrate the system of the body. Avoid sodas and caffeinated drinks as it removes the fluids from the body, causing it to be dehydrated. With changing the diet and lifestyle, it is possible to address the issue of extreme constipation the natural way.
