There are many reasons why people may seek eyebrow replacement treatment. Perhaps you've suffered alopecia, maybe you've had an adverse reaction to steroids. Perhaps it's simply a matter that as you are aging, your hair is shedding.

Whatever the reason for your need for eyebrow replacement, thinning eyebrows can be a major blow to our self-esteem, leading us to feel insecure about our looks and how others see us – after all, as the old adage goes, the eyes are the windows of the soul, and if the window frames are looking below par, then it's only natural that we won't feel our best.

However, there are a number of actions that can be taken to assist in the quest for eyebrow restoration:

Eyebrow Tattoo:

Eyebrow tattoos have been around for some time now. With the advent of semi permanent make up, an eyebrow tattoo may be the best solution for some patients. Costs for eyebrow tattoos vary from around $200 - $2,000 depending on the aesthetician performing the process.

The downsides are that these can end up looking too thick or in an unnatural color, or appear rather one dimensional when seen up close. If you are considering an eyebrow tattoo and are in the USA, be sure to find a practitioner who is registered with the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, and be sure to choose the right color for you, based on your skin tone – for example, if you have 'cool' skin, with a bluish undertone, then you need to avoid any red-based browns, to avoid a purplish look to your eyebrow tattoo.

Eyebrow Regrowth Serum:

In the past few years, there have been a number of products to come to the market that can help eyelashes grow longer and thicker. Originally discovered when glaucoma patients were using eyedrops, one of the side effects were a rapid growth in eyelashes and a noticeable improvement in eyelash thickness and density.

A number of these products can also be used on eyebrows, to help stimulate growth. The best products don't come cheap, weighing in at around $100+, but that's still considerably less than eyebrow transplants, and are a good start point for people considering eyebrow replacement, and use of these products may avert the need for eyebrow transplants at all. See my related article list below for a range of eyelash growth serum articles and advice.

Eyebrow Implants:

Eyebrow implants are a less drastic alternative to eyebrow transplants, suitable for those with patchy eyebrows who just required a small amount of eyebrow restoration. Just as these days we can implant anything from scalp hair plugs to teeth, technology has advanced to a point where a small graft of hair can be taken from somewhere discreet (such as just behind the ear) and individual hairs are grafted into the eyebrows in the direction of the natural brow growth.

The procedure takes a few hours and is performed under local anaesthetic. Around 90% of the eyebrow implants survive. As these hairs keep growing, it will be a question of maintaining these by regular trimming. Costs for eyebrow implants are on a per hair basis, and vary from $3 - $7 dollars per hair – bear in mind that hundreds may be used, so costs can soon mount up.

Eyebrow Transplants:

A different approach to eyebrow implants is an eyebrow transplant method, known as a 'scalp to eyebrow pedicle flap'. Under local anaesthetic, a piece of hair and skin is taken from the temple or behind the ear and is grafted into the eyebrow through a tunnel under the skin. Because this form of eyebrow transplants requires stitches, it is less common than the eyebrow implants. Costs for an eyebrow transplant procedure using this method come in at around $4,000.
