Male ballet dancers usually have to lift ballerinas off the floor during performances. This means although you need to be light enough so as not to hurt your toes, you need to be strong enough to lift ballerinas off the floor.

Ballet was introduced in the 15th century in Europe. Today, the dance has a global appeal, but the traditions such as the steps, the attire, the way the dancers look, and the positions have not changed. Male dancers are refereed to as ballet dancers while their female counterparts are referred to as ballerinas. Unlike ballerinas who dance in pointe shoes, male dancers dance in shoes that have soft soles, mostly because of the positions they assume and the fact that the shoes make it possible to lift ballerinas without the risk of slipping.

All ballet dancers wear stocking-like 'tights' that cover most of the body. It therefore follows that for success in ballet dancing, you must work to tone your body.
