Fashion

The media has a huge influence on fashion. People get fashion ideas from magazines, films, music videos and even books. The products that receive the most exposure in magazines are usually the ones that become the latest fashion trend.
Many years ago fashion was often influenced by respectable figures in society such as Royal families and their predecessors. Many people saw Princess Dianna as a fashion icon and kings and Queens from the Edwardian, Tudor and Victorian eras. This still occurs today but in most places it is now celebrities that influence fashion the most.
Celebrities are known for looking fashionable as much as they can. They are usually popular and financially successful so for the average person replicating a celebrities fashion choices might make them feel as if they can be too. This is why many fashion designers turn to A-list celebrities to wear their garments for free at high profile events. Not only is it free advertising for the designer, it creates a desire for the garment, just for the mere fact that it is 'good enough' for the celebrity to wear.
It is commonly believed in western countries that followers of fashion might do so because they feel that it will help them blend in with society. If everyone was fashionable people who weren't would feel isolated and different.
Most people have their own perceptions of what fashion is. For some people it is clothing that is popular or current, a way to hide a personal flaw, be accepted into society by conforming to a stereotype or express their individuality. There are many examples of what fashion is but what is very clear is that fashion is constantly changing. What remains fashionable today might be unfashionable tomorrow so if you want to keep up with all the latest trends you will need to keep an eye on the media.
