Faux Black Forest Cake Recipe - Made with Yodels

By Edited Jul 14, 2016 0 0

Yodels are delicious treat many will remember from childhood when it was ok for Moms to give their kids a sugary snack. If you have a secret Yodels obsession, you are in luck because you can turn that childhood memory into a wonderfully delicious adult dessert. For those of you who may not know what a Yodel is – no not the mountain singing – it is a pre packaged chocolate cake made by Drakes Cakes, owned by Hostess brand bakeries. From my understanding, Yodels aren’t available everywhere, but you can order them online because there is no match for an authentic Drake's Yodel. As an alternative to those living in an area where Little Debbie’s cakes are easier to find than Drake’s Yodels, you can substitute the Yodels for Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls. Drake’s Yodels and Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls are chocolate cake rolled up with a cream filling and covered in chocolate.

black-forest Cake is an amazing taste experience incorporating chocolate cake, cream and cherries all in one spectacular dessert. black-forest cake was originally developed in Germany and the name has nothing to do with the black-forest in Germany. The name is derived from a distilled cherry liquor called Schwarzwälder Kirschwasser, which is used when making the traditional version of black-forest cake. The real version will have you sweating in the kitchen and baking for hours. The faux version will have you out of the kitchen in a few minutes. This is a great recipe to make with your kids, in fact it’s so easy you can have your kids make it with a little bit of supervision if they are young and no supervision if they are little older. There is no baking involved in this Faux black-forest Cake recipe so you are not heating up the house.

Faux Black Forrest Cake Shopping List

16 Drakes Cakes Yodels or Little Debbie Swiss Rolls

 1/3 cup Cherry Preserves

8 ounces cream cheese

½ cup Confectioner’s Sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

¾ cup Heavy Cream

Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar

Parchment paper or wax paper

Faux black-forest Cake Prep Work

Place a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar into the freezer.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. You can also lay the wax paper or parchment paper over a large, flat serving platter, which will give you a ready to serve dessert already on a pretty plate rather than an extra pan to wash later.

Add 8 ounces of cream cheese -- you can use a brick or whipped cream cheese -- ½ cup of confectioner’s sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to a large bowl.

Mix the ingredients with an electric mixer until well blended, light and creamy. Slowly add in ¾ cup heavy cream while mixing continuously until the heavy cream is just mixed into the cream cheese mixture. This is the step to supervise or take over for the kids. The cream cheese, sugar, vanilla and heavy cream concoction should have the consistency of a light and fluffy icing.

Remove the plastic wrap from 16 Drakes Cakes Yodels or Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls. Discard the plastic wrappers.

Place a Yodel or Swiss Roll on top of the parchment paper or wax paper. Line up a second Yodel or Swiss Roll to the end of the first one.

Lay three more rows of Yodels/Swiss rolls next to the first row. You will now have built a square from the cakes. You may have to use a few extra Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls because they are a little smaller than their Drake’s Cakes Yodels alternative, unless you buy the ones labeled as “larger cakes”.

Pour 1/3 cup of cherry preserves over the Swiss Rolls or Yodel with a spatula or dull knife to create an even layer.

Place a second layer of Yodels or Swiss Rolls over the top of the fist layer of cakes and cherry preserves. Lay the cakes atop the first layer running in the same direction.

Pop the cake and cherry preserves in the freezer for one to two hours. Cover the cream cheese mixture with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for 45 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes – in other words take the cream cheese mixture out of the refrigerator 15 minutes before you remove the cakes from the freezer.

Remove the Yodels or Swiss Rolls from the freezer and set them on a flat and level work surface.

Dip a spatula into the cream cheese mixture and scoop some up. Spread the cream cheese over the top of the cakes and down along the sides, front and back until you’ve used all of it.

Remove the Hershey’s milk chocolate bar from the freezer.

Hold a peeler along the edge and shave chocolate off the bar and on top of the cake.

Place the faux black-forest Cake into the refrigerator for four hours to let it set before serving.

Garnish the top of the cake with Maraschino Cherries.
