Featured Reading

Publishing content on InfoBarrel has many advantages such as the opportunity to have an article featured on the site's front page. But a featured article offers more than front page exposure, it may also increase traffic and can help with search engine rankings. In addition, a feature may be posted on the InfoBarrel Facebook page or on their Twitter page, which has over 1,400 followers. Another benefit of a featured article is that it will automatically go into the Featured RSS feed and may get promoted on discovery engine sites.

Many InfoBarrel authors consider it a tremendous honor when one of their articles is chosen as a feature. A number of them even post about it in the InfoBarrel Forum. So, if you're one of the many writers here on InfoBarrel and you haven't had one of your articles featured yet, here are some pointers to help you get your article(s) on the front page.

Tips For Getting Featured

The following tips are suggestions from the InfoBarrel administration to help get your articles featured.

Include Pictures

Incorporate high quality photographs throughout your article. You may use personal photographs or you can find some sites which offer royalty free photos. Two popular sites for photos are Wikipedia (creative common images) and Morguefile. Although the photographs require no royalties, you should always document the proper credit(s) for any photo that is not your own personal property.

Include Citations

Citations improve the credibility of an article and although they are not required, the administration will lean more towards articles with citations where applicable.

Attractive Formatting

When appropriate use headings and break-up an article into concise and informative sections.  When writing a "Top List" be sure to include matching widths to make everything look uniform.

Entertaining and Resourceful Content

An article should provide some value to the reader. Make an effort to write entertaining and resourceful articles.

"Feature an Article"

Once you have written your feature worthy article, you must submit it to the admin for review and consideration. All members will see a "Feature an Article" button at the top right side of their profile page. Click-on that button and scroll through the feature topics. When you find the correct topic, choose it and add the title of your article just underneath it. Only current articles are allowed, in other words, if you are writing an article in April, you can only submit it in April for May consideration.

Happy reading!

Reviewing this article was interesting, simply because it was one of your pieces upon which I made my very FIRST IB comment. It was your article about the political underpinning of "The Wizard of Oz", and I just now read it again. For my money, it's STILL one of the best things I've read on this site simply because of the perspective. (And look at me now -- I know who you are, and not just some anonymous writer whose work impressed me back when). Congrats on the much-deserved success.

Thanks so much for the kind words, vicdillinger! I appreciate people like you who are extremely talented, however, not pompous or self-absorbed. You are part of a select group of elite talent here on IB who takes the time to encourage others with positive feedback. And by the way, the comment you made on my "Oz" article was so encouraging and generous that it ranks as one of my favorites.
Jan 1, 2012 2:46am
Oh, yeah, I gave you a thumb for this, too.

Great article Deb, I enjoy all of your awesome features, but The Snowman is my all time fav. Congrats all.

Hey Lynsuz; thank you so much for the comment! You know, I really like that Snowman article also and I'm happy that you enjoyed it. I consider you the top recipe author here on IB and I appreciate the fact that you are generous enough to take the time to read and comment on my articles. I'm so happy to have you as my IB friend. Thanks again!!
