Fiction
Fiction is a piece of literary work in which the story line,
characters and events are imaginary and not based on real world facts. Although
some fiction does contain accurate facts, such as historical fiction, the
events surrounding the facts are imaginary. Other types of fiction, such as
science fiction, are completely made up and lack a connection to the real
world. Although when most people think of fiction, they think of a full length book
or novel, fiction can also include short stories and compilations of short
stories.
The critical elements found in any well constructed work of fiction include those of well developed characters, thoroughly developed plot lines, realistic settings, theme and the author's writing style or voice. The common element of all works of fiction is that they tell a story from beginning to end, which is also known as the narrative. The central character in a work of fiction is called the Protagonist. Another important component of any fiction book is that of dialogue. Dialogue is the conversation that each of the characters has with the other characters and must be easy to read and follow.
The appeal of fiction to readers stems from the many different fiction styles there are to choose from. Several popular fiction styles include: mystery, adventure, sci-fi, teen lit, chick lit, children's fiction, romance, Christian fiction, historical fiction, and many more. Since fiction books are read primarily for entertainment, the types of fiction genres evolve over time with new types being developed based on reader interest and demand.
Fiction books are one of the most popular book genres with the category of "General Fiction" accounting for an average of 54 percent of all yearly book sales. In fact, fiction books are the top rated form of publishing in terms of sales, followed closely by non-fiction books. A simple walk through any bookstore reveals numerous rows of hardback and paperback works of fiction all waiting to help readers escape reality by transporting them to the pages of a fantasy world.
