Find a Worker Compensation Attorney

Things You Will Need

Some need for information about workers compensation laws and help with your workers compensation claims.

Step 1

The first step is of course to search. That is sort of obvious but you can do this in a number of ways. You can usually benefit most from referrals of family or friends who have had experience with a particular worker compensation attorney. They generally will give you the best and most pertinent information on a particular attorney. Just be sure and take any stories of "I knew a guy who was awarded 1 million dollars for a paper cut" with a grain of salt. Every case is different.

Step 2

If you are unable to get a referral to a good worker compensation attorney from family or friends then using the phone book yellow pages is a good option. Online search with your state or city name as well as worker compensation attorney as search terms this will narrow the results down tremendously.

Step 3

At this point you should have a list of a few worker compensation attorneys and it's time to research the attorney. Many states have a specialization for lawyers who choose to work in worker's accident claims. Is your attorney a specialist in worker's comp laws? Also if you did not find your attorneys through your state bar association, verify they are licensed to practice law in your state. You can contact your state bar association via their website or by phone or mail.

Step 4

At this step it is time to talk to the worker compensation attorney you think meets your needs best. Ask some hard questions about fees. Ask if you will be required to pay anything or do they work on a commission basis? Ask about appeals how well does your worker compensation attorney understand all the stages. Has this worker compensation attorney represented cases similar to your own?

Step 5

Part of finding and selecting a good worker compensation attorney will be based on how you feel about him. Do you feel you can trust this attorney to handle your accident claim in a thoughtful and timely manner? Can you talk to him freely? This too plays a part in finding a good worker compensation attorney.

Tips & Warnings

Once you have found your worker compensation attorney then settle back and let them handle the law, you life will be much less complicated.

Even if you've found a good lawyer to handle the workers' compensation claim, it is still best to oversee the process, and not totally sit back or relax. Sure the lawyer makes things easier, but you can learn some legal processes if you immerse yourself to the claim and see how it works.
