The reduction of postage mail today will really only affect your stamp collection if you rely on cancelled stamps. Every stamp that is released by the post office is available to the public to purchase. Periodically throughout the year new stamps are released. Pay attention to the schedule and visit your local post office to purchase new stamps as they are released. You can also order new stamps online through the post office!

But what about the older items that you wish to add to your stamp collection? This is where stamp collecting can become fun if you are patient and don't mind shopping around. One of the easiest ways to expand your stamp collection is to visit a hobby store that specializes in this particular field.

Stamp collecting stores are not nearly as popular as they once were, but if you look hard enough you should be able to locate at least one that is reasonably close to your home. Spending a few hours at a stamp collecting store is a great way to find new items for your collection. You will also find plenty of useful stamp collecting supplies, including things like albums, stamp bags, rubber tweezers, and large magnifying glasses.

In addition to stamp collecting stores you should also keep your eyes open for stamp collecting shows. If you have an expo center or something like it in your area, grab a schedule of their upcoming events. Stamp collecting shows are pretty popular, although they may be combined with other similar hobbies such as coin collecting. When you find a suitable option, mark your calendar so you don't forget about it!

Another way to expand your stamp collection is to visit online auction sites. While EBay is the most popular, there are plenty of other auction sites around. When using a site like EBay you are certainly taking a bit of risk that the item you are bidding on is authentic and it will reach you safely once you've paid for it. Always pay attention to the seller's rating. If the deal seems too good to be true – it probably is!

Lastly, ask your friends and family to keep an eye open for stamps for you. This is particularly useful if you like to collect foreign stamps and you know someone who lives abroad. Have them save envelopes and things of that nature! You'll be surprised how quickly you'll expand your stamp collection.
