Best Hard Drives Money Can Buy

The importance of backups

A reliable external hard drive is one of the most important computer peripherals you can get.  the reason for this is simple: backups.

Our lives are becoming more and more spent online. Data is everything. Think of your house. If your house was on fire and you had 30 seconds to get out or face death what would you save.

Chances are the answers pretty simple.  most people would save their valuables that are worth more than simple cash.

  • Photos
  • music collection
  • personal correspondence
  • business information
  • bills
  • online work

The great thing is is that each and every one of those items is something that cannot be saved online. Even better than that each one of them is something that can be saved multiple places online. You can make enough backups these days that of a meteor were strike your house each still be able to recover your important data.  That is what backups are about.

Now let's get back to our burning house...

If the house is on fire all you need to do is grab your computer backup and run out the door.  If you're like me you might stop along the way and grab your laptop and one or two other extremely valuable items.  But it really isn't necessary.  The important thing is your life and maybe your essential personal files, info and "stuff". The photos, personal correspondence and all of your information that can never be replaced.  Well, now it can be replaced.  Thank God for good backups.

One Reason for an Externa HardDrive

The Best External Hard Drives

What does it take to be a great hard drive?

The Best hard drives are going to have a few things:

  • They're going to be reliable
  • They're going to be relatively inexpensive
  • They're going to run quietly
  • Hard drive installation should be simple
  • Ample Space
  • Sleek Design
  • The should be from a large and reliable company (that stands by their product)

If your potential backup meets these requirements, it will be a great deal for an external backup regardless of brand or model. But for the sake of consistency two major backup manufacturers consistently make products that fit these requirements: Seagate and Western Digital.  Both of these companies make excellent hard drives that are reliable, inexpensive, quiet, spacious and have a sleek design.

These companies have been in business for a long time because of one simple fact:  they make high-quality hard drives at low cost.  Other companies make decent products, of course, but Seagate and Western Digital make reliable and high quality products year in and year out. YOu ca  rest assured you are getting a quality device each time you make a purchase.

Best Hard Drives: Reliabiliity

Reliability should be a primary focus of any purchase

Western Digital hard drives are extremely reliable.  That is not to say that Seagate and other brands are not.  Just that Western Digital is a little more reliable than  much of the competition.

The reliability of the Western Digital external hard drives is just one aspect that makes a Western Digital one of the kings of backups. Western Digital simply has a wonderful history of leaving satisfied customers, and enjoy one of the highest satisfaction ratio's of any external backups around.

Western Digital backup drives are also among the least expensive drives.  Even the largest of the Western Digital My Passport brand of hard drive the massive and spacious 2TB version is only priced at barely over $100.

In a land where there are many external hard drivesto be found priced at 1TB.  WD "My Passport" goes up to 2TB.  That is a pretty large external drive. Of course Seagate has a drive that goes up to 3 TB. So, if it is purely size your after, Seagate may be the way to go.

A ton of space. Great customer reviews. Reasonable prices. Small size and great portability. There is a lot to love about this great tool for PC backups and storage.

SeaGate GoFlex Family of Hard Drives

The versatile goFlex drives

The Seagate GoFlex drives are versatile

Like the WD Hard drives, Seagate drives are also relatively inexpensive and reliable. They are not quite is whisper quiet as the Western Digital drives, which are so quiet it could almost be seen as a negative.  (I find I have to look at the light on  the Western Digital HD to tell if it is even on.)

The Seagate GoFlex wins hands-down for versatility.  They have a small 2.5 inch hard drive version that is smaller than a deck of cards that can easily slide into a jacket pocket and be transported anywhere. Anyone who wants to move their music, pictures and documents from place to place will love the mobility of their slim designed smaller backup options.

On the other end of the spectrum the "Seagate Expansion" line of products are larger and have what seems to be a metric ton of storage space.  One of the largest being an astounding 3 TB.  That is so much space is hard to imagine what could be done with it.  This in on this drive can hold all of your music, photos and documents, as well as being the source for daily or even recurring backups.

The ease-of-use of the Seagate Expansionis another incredible facet of this drive.  The WD elements and many other hard drives are plug-and-play.  These are easy to use.  The Seagate Expansion on the other hand is even easier.  It has full plug-and-play capability at the same time it also has prior carry software that comes with it to make backups a snap.

That is not all the versatility that the Seagate hard drive incorporates.  Seagate is truly versatile. The way it shows this is in the connections. You can get a Seagate drive with a USB 3.0 or a FireWire connection or a eSata connection or even with a USB 3.0 connection.  In case you didn't know each one of those form of connections get a progressively greater transfer rate. Not all computers are keep full of using all connections (usb 2.0 being standard) but regardless of which type you have the versatile drive from Seagate will be able to handle it.

The final icing on the cake comes in the form of the priciest part of the Seagate line. This is the Seagate "Home" series.  The series comes with all the options of previous series, up to and including an enormous 3 TB version.  The difference comes with what they add-on.  The "home" version of Seagate HD comes with a wireless connectivity.  In other words don't even worry about all those slower transfer ratio connections.  The Seagate Home backup drive will connect wirelessly to your router and therefore also allow you  the ability to use this drive to back up and store common data for all your computer and network needs.

You cannot get much more versatile than that.
