Finding College Help for Single Mothers

By | 2 Comments | Rating: 0 | |
Want to go back to school but don't know how to afford the ever-rising cost of higher education? There is college help for single mothers out there, but you have to know where to find it. These suggestions can get you started…and some of them might surprise you.

Government Grants. The best bet for anyone going back to college, single mother or not, is to get a grant to pay for expenses. Grants do not have to be paid back as long as they are used for what they were intended…in this case, as long as the grants are awarded for schooling and you are actively enrolled, you don't have to worry about paying back a dime. www.grants.gov is a good place to go to find out about grants, but there are others that the government doesn't offer. Which leads us to…

Private Grants. Private grants are given by organizations, individuals, and some colleges in order to help single mothers move forward in their educational endeavors. Check with your Chamber of Commerce to find information about which businesses in your area provide grants to low-income single moms. Some wealthy individuals offer grants to a certain number of people every year, or look for those in tough circumstances. Contact your local newspaper or media outlets to find information on people like this.

Scholarships. If you had great grades in high school or you have a certain something that sets you apart from the crowd, you might qualify for scholarships. These are usually awarded by businesses or by the college itself, and they usually don't have to be paid back.

Employer Programs. If you have an employer who offers to pay for some college credits, take advantage of the offer! Some employers will only pay for one class per semester, but taking one class is better than taking none at all. Talk to your human resources director about what might be available to you.

College Financial Aid. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, helps schools determine how much you can afford to pay and how much financial aid you will need to meet your educational goals. The FAFSA aids in getting student loans, grants, and other financial services that will help your college dreams come true. Visit www.fafsa.com to get started.

Women's Magazines and Publications. It might sound odd, but it's worth a shot! Sometimes women's magazines and women's trade publications will hold essay contests and the like, offering grants as a reward. In this case, you will usually explain your situation and why you need the money, and if you win, you will be able to use the money to pay down your college debt or start fresh schooling. Many women have funded some of their college this way, so it's worth a shot. To get started, visit the websites of major women's magazines, such as Redbook or Woman's Day, to search for scholarships or grants they might offer.

thats his website. He only asks that you donate a small amoutn and that every little bit will help him reach his goal of going to a good university in the States.

If you can't donate, I suggest you should at least tell other people about it, he sound like a pretty legit guy. I donated! and if you think hes a scam you can meet him on msn or skype! it was cool, I donated to him just cause i thought he deserved it!
