Finding the Personal Injury Lawyer Who's Right For Your Case
If you've been injured and need to find a personal injury lawyer, it's important that you be careful. After all, sleazy injury lawyers run late night commercials designed to lure you in and their offices are usually no more than factories designed to process as many injury cases as quickly as possible so that they get to the big payday cases quickly--it's sort of like a lottery system and to them, you're just a number.
That doesn't mean you should never hire a popular injury lawyer, it just means you need to do extra due diligence during the hiring process which is complicated by the fact that you're injured and probably both eager to get on with your life and feeling a little desperate to get the case resolved.
So, here's how you can make sure that you're especially careful when you're hiring a personal injury lawyer for your case.
- Meet with several personal injury lawyers. Never hire a lawyer after meeting with just one. Instead, attend several consultations and find out what makes each personal injury lawyer unique. This will help you get a better idea of the different types of attorneys you can hire.
- Be prepared for the meeting. For a complete list of what to bring to a consultation with a personal injury lawyer, you'll want to see my article on the topic. Being prepared means bringing along copies of any evidence, particularly photos, memos, and any written documents, so that you can show prospective injury lawyers the case so far.
- Ask about other cases. You may think your case is super strong and likely to be get you a big settlement, but that doesn't mean you want to find the personal injury lawyer who promises the biggest dollars--they may just be feeding into your perfectly natural desire to be fairly compensated for what's happened to you. So instead of asking how much they think you're likely to get, ask them for examples of other cases they've fought and won at different price points. You're looking for an injury lawyer who takes every case seriously, regardless of the settlement size.
- Ask about settlement proceedures. Similarly, you don't want a personal injury lawyer who looks to close the easy cases fast just to get *any* settlement. After all, closing a case quickly saves the lawyer time and means that the per hour rate goes up accordingly (if a case can be closed in 15 minutes for a $10,000 settlement, that may be the attorney's choice over a case that takes a year for a $100,000 settlement). Make sure that you and your selected personal injury lawyer are on the same page about settling.
