There are many interesting ways to decorate walls in a home, such metal wall art, prints or paintings. It is also fun to add an unexpected item to dress the walls, like a decorative fireplace screen. These screens come in many different styles, colors and materials. They can easily be adapted from their primary use to wall hangings, and with just a little vision it is easy to turn a simple fireplace screen into and fabulous wall hanging that is as beautiful as any piece of artwork.

Finding the Right Screen

When planning to use a fireplace screen as a wall hanging, it is important to consider the décor of the room. For example, in a home with rustic decor, select a wrought iron screen, because the material has a rustic aesthetic. However, an iron screen can also work in a contemporary or traditional room depending on the design of the screen. Fireplace screens are also available in copper and brass, and these materials work in many different styles of rooms depending on the actual design of the screen. Copper and brass often lend themselves particularly well to a vintage style room. Another important consideration when hanging a fireplace screen is its weight and it is important to make sure that the screen is properly anchored to the wall for safety. Fireplace screens can be simple or ornate, and many of them are even constructed from glass, which can work well in a window or as a room divider. Some even have stained glass inserts, which can bring a beautiful array of colors into a room. This type of screen is also attractive mounted over a mirror so that the light can bounce through the stained glass and back into the room.

Customizing a Screen

When a fireplace screen is set up to function in the fireplace, it may not look like it would do well on a wall. However, take off the legs, and it begins to look like a wall hanging. Once the legs are off, the flat panel that remains may even resemble a metal trellis. The screen can be hung exactly as it is, or it can be embellished to further accent the room's décor. With just a few, little changes a plain panel can be transformed into a gorgeous piece of wall art.

Other Embellishments

Mounting a mirror behind a fireplace screen is a great way to add depth and dimension to the wall hanging. While this technique works brilliantly with glass fireplace screens, it works equally well with metal screens. It is also very effective to mix materials when hanging a fireplace screen on the wall. Take a wrought iron fireplace screen for instance, and mount it on a piece of rustic barn wood to create an eye catching wall hanging then coordinate the look with other decorative wall art like metal birds artwork.

Another fun idea is to hang an iron fireplace screen on the wall, and let it mimic a garden trellis. Hang a couple of planters on the wall beneath the fireplace screen and let the plants climb and cover the indoor trellis. In a kitchen, a fireplace screen can be mounted to the wall and painted to match the room's décor, or it can be surrounded with terracotta tiles to create a focal point on the kitchen wall. Regardless of which room a fireplace screen is hung, it makes a lovely and artistic addition to the room. Whether it is painted, embellished or left plain it brings depth and interest to a wall offering an unexpected pop of design in an otherwise ordinary room.
