You may think that fish oil is only for adults, but children can benefit from fish oil supplements if they don’t like to eat a lot of fish. These supplements work wonders for children because of what the supplements can do for the brain. 60% of the brain is made up of fat and Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil help the brain stay strong. Recently medical researchers concluded that children who these oil supplements excel academically.

For children who are at risk of learning disabilities or ADHD can improve their mental health by taking fish oil supplements instead of regular prescription drugs, since studies have shown that there are negative side effects to certain prescriptions that are given to children. These supplements may be safer for children for those reasons.

When you purchase fish oil supplements, make sure the supplements don’t contain toxic substances such as mercury, and you want to choose supplements with antioxidants for maximum benefits. They should have DHA in them as this improves brain power. As for dosage, 500 milligrams a day is just right for children.

Did you know that fish oil can help children with weight loss and keep their cardiovascular system healthy? In addition to the oil supplements, make sure your children eat a balanced meal of proteins, vegetables and fruits, and carbohydrates. Also have them get in one to two hours of physical exercise each day.

If you hate to get the cold or flu, increase your intake of fish oil supplements because fish oil builds up your immune system and this prevents the development of colds and flus. In addition to the fish oil supplements you should take vitamin C supplements because this also builds your immune system.  And lets face it children always get colds and the flu during the winter months and instead of giving them nasty-tasting cough or cold syrup, get fish oil supplements because these supplements strengthen the immune system. My six-year-old daughter is allergic to cough syrup and when I gave her liquid fish oil, her cold went away quickly.

When you purchase these supplements for children, you want supplements that are molecularly distilled, which means the manufacturers separated the toxic substances from the fish oil. The supplements should also come from fish that swam in clear waters. If the supplements smell too fishy, they’re not of the best quality.

Children often eat foods that are high in cholesterol and trans-fats, and when you give children fish oil tablets, you help them lower their cholesterol.  A child’s retina has plenty of fatty acids and these supplements keep the retina healthy so the child can improve his vision.

If you’re not sure which brand of fish oil supplements to get, read reviews of these supplements on online blogs and interior decorating magazines. Another idea is to ask friends who use the oil if they have suggestion

Fish Oil Benefits For The Elderly

Senior citizens face several health obstacles and some senior citizens are looking for natural health remedies to treat certain illnesses. One supplement that is especially beneficial for senior citizens is fish oil. Fish oil benefits senior citizens regarding their mental health, cardiovascular health and joint health.

Fish oil improves the heart health of senior citizens by reducing the levels of triglycerides in the heart. When you have high levels of triglycerides in your cardiovascular system, your chances of heart disease goes up.  It lowers your blood pressure and reduces blood clotting in your system.  Fish oil is good for reducing levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol and it raises levels of HDL, or good cholesterol in the body. When you purchase fish oil, find out which dosage would be good for those with cardiovascular problems.

The oil also works to improve your brain power and it reduces your chances of getting Alzheimers disease and dementia. A recent study by the University of Waterloo in Canada mentioned that nursing home residents at a certain nursing home were only taking 121 milligrams of fish oil, which is far below the recommended dosage of 1000 to 1800 milligrams. For senior citizens who battle depression and anxiety, these supplements increase the serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is the hormone in your brain that causes pleasant feelings and overall good moods.

If you’re unable to take fish oil supplements, you can get your fish oil intake by eating the following fish; tuna, mackerel, salmon, cod, oysters and trout. You want to eat the fish in moderation as fish often contains tiny traces of mercury and other metals from the water.

Fish oil is good for hair growth as a senior citizen and to get the best results for your hair, purchase a bottle of the oil and rub some of it throughout your scalp along with other oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil and olive oil. As you get older your hair gets thinner so fish oil helps you combat hair loss, and it works better than traditional hair loss treatments in some cases.

If you’re an older man with a family history of prostate cancer or a woman with a history of breast cancer, purchase the oil because medical studies have shown that the EPA and DHA in fatty acids prevent these cancers. Senior citizens with arthritis benefit from fish oil because fish oil has anti-inflammatory qualities.  According to Peter Howe of the University of South Australia, the oil can also help with weight loss. This is because when you consume fish, you reduce your chances of weight gain and other obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes and kidney disease. You should still eat the fish in small portions and pair it up with brown rice or roasted vegetables with homemade vinaigrette.

In conclusion, fish oil has amazing benefits for senior citizens and it reduces certain medical conditions from hindering their quality of life. When you use it you’re using a medical treatment that doesn’t have the same toxic chemicals or addictive properties as major pharmaceutical drugs. Whats more is  that it is also inexpensive and can be found in fish or in supplements.
