Fish Oil During Pregnancy

By Edited Sep 8, 2015 0 0

If you’re pregnant, you may have heard about the fish oil benefits for pregnant women and the unborn babies. According to the American Pregnancy Association, fish oil is beneficial for the baby’s brain and visual development and it ensures that the mother will have a safe delivery of the baby. In addition, a woman doesn’t get a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids through fish during pregnancy because it wouldn’t be safe for the baby as fish sometimes has small traces of mercury and other substances. Omega 3 fatty acids also decrease premature labor. Generally fish oil is safe to use during pregnancy but you want to use fish oil that has no impurities.

When you purchase fish oil during pregnancy, make sure the oil doesn’t smell or taste like fish because if it does, the fish oil is of poor quality. Visit different health food stores and inquire about whether certain fish oils were manufactured with fish from clean waters and if the toxins were separated from the fish oil. Ask your doctor which brand of fish oil is the safest to use during pregnancy.

As for the proper dosage of fish oil during pregnancy, the FDA and other health experts recommend that pregnant women get between 500 to 1000 milligrams per day but your doctor may advise you to take less than that amount. When you purchase the fish oil supplements, read the dosage amounts and don’t take more than the required amount per day to prevent health problems for you and the baby.

During pregnancy you may run the risk of getting pre-eclampsia. This is a pregnancy-related condition where high blood pressure gets to a dangerous level and it could cause a stroke and sometimes death. Taking fish oil helps pregnant women reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia.

According to researchers at Emory University, pregnant women who use fish oil supplements can help newborns fend off colds.  The study concluded that mothers who received fish oil with high amounts of DHA had babies with less risks of getting colds. This is a safe way for pregnant women to ensure the health of their babies.

If you have allergies or any current medical conditions that are not related to the pregnancy, talk with your doctor first before using the fish oil supplements. This is important because you don’t want the fish oil to trigger the allergies or cause problems during the pregnancy. If you can’t have fish oil supplements ask your doctor about ways you can get your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids.

In February an interesting study was released by the UCLA Easton Center for Alzheimers Research. The study stated that when people are lacking in their consumption of fish oil, their brains age quicker and are at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study was done on a few individuals and those who didn’t have an adequate amount of fish oil did poorly on mental tests compared to those who consumed high amounts of fish oil. The directors of the study recommended that people consume more fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel as well as other sources of Omega 3 fatty acids such as leafy greens and nuts.  It is truly fascinating at how many ways fish oil benefits the human body.

Aid In Depression During Pregnancy

Instead of running to your favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream to treat depression, run for the nearest drugstore and pick up a large bottle of fish oil because according to recent medical studies and the facts in general, fish oil is good for treating depression.  EPA and DHA are two main ingredients in oil and these ingredients are naturally a part of the brain, which is mostly made up of fat. The EPA and DHA work together in the fish oil to treat mood swings, occasional anxiety and other depression-related symptoms.

In addition, the Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil increase serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a hormone in your brain that helps you feel better and get in a god mood overall. You can also increase your serotonin levels by eating fatty fish as much as possible. When you increase your fish oil intake, your mood improves and you’ll start to see the depression go away.

Some symptoms of depression include reduced sexual desire, boredom with most activities, fear, sleeplessness and sluggishness. When you take fish oil for depression, you’ll relieve the symptoms associated with depression. If you need to know how much fish oil you should take to treat depression, talk with your doctor so you’ll take the right dosage.

If you’re interested in researching the effects of fish oil on depression, you can read some health journals and magazines on this topic as well as books. Talk with people who use this oil for depression and ask how the oil has helped them overcome this condition. Watch news reports that deal with the link between fish oil and depression.

Some women may experience post-partum depression and if they take fish oil during pregnancy, they can reduce the post-partum depression that occurs following pregnancy. This is a natural alternative to traditional prescription drugs they can take to relieve this condition.

Fish oil may work for people who experienced negative side effects of regular antidepressants. Some antidepressants have side effects such as headaches, difficulties in sleeping, nausea and sometimes vision problems. But if these persons take the oil, they won’t have these effects. If you don’t want children to get addicted to antidepressants, give them fish oil to relieve depression.

You want to remember that fish oil is designed to treat minor depression and if you have a case of severe depression, you should visit the psychologist to discuss and get treatment for it. However, you can still take the fish oil in addition to what the doctor prescribes.
