Fish Oil Supplementation

Health Benefits of Fish Oil Pills

So we all heard of supplementing fish oil into our daily diet to have a healthy heart right? I mean that is what the bottle of fish oil will say when you buy it.  The truth is supplementation of fish oil into your daily diet can help a number of other conditions that you might be affected by or have yet to been affected by.  Are you suffering from depression (postpartum), memory loss, fibromyalgia, anxiety issues, attention deficit hypertrophy disorder, or schizophrenia?  Fish oil supplementation is very helpful in improving these conditions and helping your body function better cognitively and physically.  It has also been recently shown to help with pain and inflammation that is a direct result from arthritis. With all the health benefits revealed, supplementing this pill into your daily routine seems to be a no brainer when it comes to purchasing a natural enhancer for a better life.

It is strongly made up of omega-3 fatty acids of where a deficiency in omega-3's can result in the conditions listed above.  So what are the 3 fatty acids of this bunch.  These polyunsaturated fats are called:

1.) EPA - eicosapentaenoic acid

2.) DHA - docosahexaenoic acid

3.) ALA -  linolenic acid

So which one of these are considered the most important?  Well the odd-ball of the group of omega-3 fatty acids is ALA.  EPA and DHA confer with the benefits of cardiovascular health that is often affiliated with the supplementation of fish oil.

Besides getting fish oil in pill form, some of the most common sources of ingesting these highly beneficial omega-3 fatty acids are from fish itself!  What a coincidence right?  So if you enjoy seafood, items such as tuna, salmon, shrimp, scallops, and sardines are packed with omega-3 fatty acids to help your health.  You should try to get around 3 to 5 servings of these foods in your daily diet every week to gain the benefits.

How about some non-fishy foods!  Consuming flax-seed oil, pumpkin, hemp seeds, and walnuts also contain your omega-3's.  Not the most tasteful of foods overall but very beneficial to your health.

Bottle of Fish Oil

It is not a bad idea to take fish oil in the form of a pill.  You can buy fish oil from any health and nutrition store (GNC, vitamin world, vitamin shoppe, etc..) or shopping center.  It is relatively inexpensive.  I bought a twin pack from Walmart for around 15 dollars of 200 soft gels in each container.  On the bottle I have, it is suggested to take the 1000 mg of fish oil which has 300 mg of Omega-3's three times per day.  I usually supplement it one with breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is not high in calories, only 10 and has 1 gram of fat.  It is interesting that on the back of the contain it says that it has the fish anchovy, mackerel, and sardine.  Personally I would not put any of that near my mouth.  This goes to show if you are not a fan of seafood or supplementing your diet with eating fish weekly; supplementating your diet with fish oil pills is an affective way to get those healthy omega-3's into your system.

As with taking any new supplement you have to be aware of side effects that may be involved and the chances increase based on certain conditions.  Be careful if you have fish allergies, are pregnant, have diabetes, have high levels of LDL, or take blood thinners.
