There are a great many fishing rods out there to use for different types of fishing these days. We have surf rods, fly rods, jigging rods, spinning rods, baitcasting rods, ice fishing rods, and many more. Trout fishing rods pretty much fall under two categories though, fly rods and spinning rods. As a rule a spinning rod and a fly rod for trout fishing is different than those used for other types of fish.

A trout spinning rod is longer than that of a bass rod. On average a trout rod is seven to ten feet long. It is lighter and much more sensitive than a bass rod. The ultralight rod, which is perfect for brook trout, is just that, ultralight, and ultrasensitive. You can feel the fish breathing before he bites your bait. Light action is definitely the way to go when you are talking about trout fishing rods. The spinning rod is the most versatile and the light to medium action rods will work for all types of trout out there, including the heavyweight lake trout. Outdoor Adventures recommends the medium action rod for the lakers. The spinning rod can be used in several different situations. It works well overhand, underhand, left handed or right handed. There are many different reels that you can find to match up well with you spinning rod. The right reel on the right rod and you will have a real trout "killing machine."

Another very popular trout fishing rod is the fly rod, in which you use a back and forth whipping action to place the "fly" in the water. Fly rods are especially popular in open terrain, but do not fare well in areas where there are a lot of overhanging trees. The line tends to get tangled in the branches. Fly rods can give you a great fight with the trout. They are great for mountain streams where the trout are thick and hungry, and the overhangs are few.

Fenwick , Pfleuger, Okuma, Southbend, Daiwa, are all greats brands for trout fishing rods.
