Five Things I Learned From Bat Kid

By 1 0

The moment I read the story of San Francisco’s own Bat kid my heart melted. Every day is a battle and a gift for this young man. I feel a twinge of regret for any complaints of boredom or time passing too slowly. Little Batman you have taught me some fine lessons.

1. Every moment is precious
The last time I checked no one makes it out of this life alive. Bat kid is a potent reminder that all we have is now and to make that now a beautiful thing. You don’t have to wait for tragedy to occur before taking action. Call your parents and thank them for the lesson they taught, let your partner know how wonderful life is because they exist, take your dog for a walk in the park and play. Life can’t last forever, but memories can last a lifetime.

2. It’s not the costume it’s the person
It’s been said that the clothes make the man, but I beg to differ, in my opinion, it’s the man who makes the clothes, or in this instance the super-hero costume. Bat kid has a brave heart, a willingness to be happy, and a drive to serve. This trifecta in one person makes Bat kid a hero with or without his costume.

3. Community is key
Surrounding yourself with people who cheer you on is one of the keys to success. As adults, we usually suffer from the dreaded IMDAS (I must do it alone syndrome), but when we join miracles happen. Bat kid easily reminds us that as a team, we can battle disease, and the occasional villain.

4. Have something to look forward to
It’s easier to fight when you know what you’re fighting for. Bat kid is fighting for his health and even though the leukemia treatments have taken over three years to complete he never wavered because he knew his day as Bat kid was coming. I am taking this lesson to heart and making sure I have something to look forward to.

5. Dreams come true
It’s all about keeping your eye in the prize. When Bat kid was strong enough he was called by the commissioner to assist his hero batman in saving a woman in distress, battling two villains, and finally receiving the key to the city. May we all follow our bliss to our dreams and make the world a safer place.

Bat kid has taught me five wonderful lessons in the short time he’s been around. I can’t wait to see what this wonder-kid has in store for the future.
