A flaky scalp is a condition which can arise at any time and for a number of reasons. It is normal for us to shed skin cells from all over as part of the normal regeneration process. Developing a flaky scalp may be first noticed by a dusting of white flecks on the collar or shoulders of dark coloured clothing.

When this form of dandruff become excessive is may be caused by a seasonal weather changes of too hot or cold. It may be the styling hair gel, mousse, conditioner, hair dye or even your hair shampoo to blame. Ingredients or chemicals in any of these products may be irritating or drying your scalp.

There are many other kinds of skin conditions that can causes a flaky scalp. Dermatitis, which is basically an irritation of the skin is one such. This tends to be triggered by genetic factors, allergies or again something irritation the skin such as soap, perfume or washing powder. This problem, which includes flaking skin, can appear on just about any part of the body including the scalp. Unless the illness is properly diagnosed it can often be thought of as just dandruff.

Dandruff in itself is not usually thought of being a serious problem but more of a nuisance due to the constant embarrassing mess on clothes. Flaky scalp dandruff is not contagious and most times it is fairly simply dealt with.

Mostly an outbreak of dandruff can be eradicated by changing hair products such as shampoo or conditioner. There are many over the counter products specifically designed to put an end to flaky scalp conditions like dandruff. Finding the cause may a process of elimination, changing brands of shampoo, soap or washing powder to see if that helps clear the problem.

Sometimes it may be a person's diet that is to blame by consuming too much spicy, sugary or salty foods all of which can have an impact on skin condition. Another very common reason for flaky scalp issues is over production of the oil secreted by sebaceous glands in the skin. While oil is needed to keep skin and hair healthy over production can lead to conditions such as seborrhoea, recognisable by red itchy and flaky scalp skin. Causes for these problems can be down to yeast or fungus which can usually be cured with proper medication.

While many scalp conditions and problems are easily solvable by over the counter medications, sometimes diet changes or even lifestyle changes to avoid things like stress can help. However, there are sometimes difficulties that are not so simply solved even with medical intervention. In any given situation, it is vitally important to first diagnose exactly what the condition is. From then on, a step by step system of testing potential remedies or eliminating triggers that make the condition flare up. In most cases the situation will eventually be cured.
