Flash your dental implant smile

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants may help to restore your smile. A dental implant is a metal device that is implanted into the bones of the jaw onto which a replacement tooth is attached. Implants can be used to replace one or more teeth. When replacing only one tooth, the implant and replacement tooth remain in the mouth at all times just like the natural teeth. When replacing several teeth or the entire upper or lower set of teeth the dentist may use the implants as anchors that hold the teeth in place to increase chewing efficiency.

The cost of cosmetic dentistry will vary widely according to the work that is being done. The entire package of replacing one tooth is much less than replacing all the teeth. In addition using implants to secure dentures is a much lower cost option than replacing each tooth with an implant.

Persons that have experienced significant bone loss in the mouth may require other surgeries to prepare for the implant surgery. The patient may need to have bone grafts and other structural work done before he is able to have a dental implant. This structural work in the mouth can significantly increase the cost of the procedure.

Many dentists today suggest implants rather than simple dentures. The implants can help to ensure that the patient retains chewing efficiency. Dentures that are connected to an implant device do not slip and move like traditional dentures. The person can still bite and chew in a much more natural manner. It has been shown that persons with dentures are more likely to be malnourished than those who have the better chewing ability offered by dentures that are supported by implants.

Restoring the teeth is important for more reasons than just the smile. Persons that are missing teeth may have difficulty in speaking some sounds. The teeth are used for formation of some of the sounds needed for speech. If the tip of the tongue cannot rest on the front teeth, which are missing, the sounds of the letters t, s and f are difficult to make. Replacing the teeth allows the person to speak normally.

If your natural teeth are in place and solid, cosmetic dentistry can help to improve your smile with other techniques that do not require removal of health teeth. Dental veneers can improve a smile by covering the imperfections of the natural teeth. Crooked teeth and gaps can be eliminated with veneers that help your natural teeth to look great.

Persons that have metallic fillings may prefer to have those fillings replaced with more natural looking white fillings. The more natural fillings can help to preserve your teeth but also do not show a metal mouth when you talk.

If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant may be the best way to restore your smile. If you are missing more than one tooth, you may wish to consider implants as retaining devices for the teeth. The implant can give you a more natural looking alternative than many of the other options available.
