Florida Bass Fishing Requires A Bigger Bait

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Florida bass fishing isn't like fishing in other parts of the country. The fish here get a LOT bigger, and a lot more aggressive. This means, if you employ the right techniques, that you can boat a lot of big fish on your next trip. Here are a few tips to help you plan your next bass Florida fishing trip.

Bass fishermen in Florida usually employ "power fishing" techniques.

When you get a few baits for the trip down here, make sure that you get some bigger, juicier powerbaits as I call them. What I am talking about, are your 1/2 ounce Rat-L-Traps, 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and swimbaits. Don't forget a big old fat wild shiner, thrown onto a float. This is by far THE BEST bass bait that you could use down here in Florida.

Some of the best colors of those baits are the classic Chrome/Blue back in the trap, white/chartreuse in the spinnerbait, chrome/blue back on the jerkbaits, and natural baitfish colors on the swimbaits. Natural colors down here are junebug, and watermelon pepper. If you spot fish chasing your jerkbait, try switching to the silver/black back version of either the trap or jerkbait, whichever they are following at the time. This should be enough to make them commit.

Wild Shiners and Big Bass Go Together Like Bread And Butter

Face it, our favorite sport fish loves to stuff himself full of wild shiners. They have to be of the "wild" variety, because these baitfish are a lot more lively when they are on the business end of a hook, with a trophy fishing staring at them through the weeds. You can either catch your own shiners, or purchase some. They get kind of expensive, especially if you have younger anglers with you. They can blow through some bait.

If you intend to catch your own bait though, it isn't difficult at all. In fact, ask your guide, if you use a guide, to help you catch your own shiners. It will greatly increase your memories of the trip! What you are going to do though, is get about 10 cups of dog food. Pick a fishy looking spot, and throw out a cup, do this in 9 more places, marking each spot on your GPS as you go. When you get finished with the dog food, return through each spot, creeping up onto it. Throw your cast net while being stealthy, and voila, big fat wild shiners! For free! This is by far the best way to have a sucessful florida bass fishing trip!
