Floss Daily
Flossing
Why floss daily?
You know you should be flossing your teeth every single day, but somehow you just forget, sometimes for days or even weeks on end. Then you go to the dentist and the hygienist reminds you just how important it is as she scrapes the accumulated tartar from your teeth. The trick is to make flossing a habit. Here is a simple step by step plan for getting into a daily flossing habit.
Your first step is to make dental floss available. Stash floss in various places, including all of your bathrooms, your bedroom end table, your desk drawer in your home office and your desk drawer in your work office, etc. Some people find that flossing in the shower is the best option for them. Making sure you have dental floss available to you wherever you may be is the first step to actually flossing on a daily basis.
Your next step is to figure out when you like to floss. Traditionally, many people like to floss at night, but if you are too tired to floss at night, you can floss at some other time. Perhaps you have more energy to floss in the morning or right after dinner when you are watching some television. The point is to figure out what time of day you are most likely to floss, establish the flossing habit at that time and then stick to it.
Your third step is to use whatever mental tactics you need to use with yourself to keep flossing every single day. If you don’t like going to the dentist, remind yourself that you will only need to go more frequently if you don’t manage to develop a daily flossing habit. If you respond best to tough love, then use tough love thoughts with yourself. Whatever you need to tell yourself to get the job done, do it.
Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth, and as you get older it only becomes more important. You can’t imagine going a day without brushing your teeth. Well, when you floss daily, you are taking good care of your gums, and you are also using one of the best methods available to prevent gum disease. The good news is that as soon as you get into a daily flossing habit you won’t ever want to go a day without flossing again.
If you don’t floss regularly, you may end up requiring a deep gum cleaning at the dentist’s office. You can have this done over the course of two dental visits, during which the dentist will numb one half of your mouth to deeply clean one side during the first visit and then the other side during the second visit. Your dentist will let you know whether or not this procedure is necessary for you.
