Fly Fishing Bag Buyers Guide

By | Jul 27, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Buying a new fly fishing bag doesn't have to be a super difficult affair. Even though most anglers will simply grab an old duffel bag from the shed, garage, or closet, and dub it the fly fishing bag of their dreams, chances are that they are missing out on what a truly designed fly fishing bag is capable of: keeping your gear organized, and dry at the same time. If you have had problems picking out a new fly fishing bag for yourself, consider some of the options you need in a bag below.

External Wader Storage

Unless you want to keep your wet rain gear and waders inside the same pouches as your dry hiking gear, you are going to need to ensure that you have an external storage space for them. Most high quality fly fishing bags will include a pocket underneath the fly fishing bag that will help you keep the rest of your gear from developing the mold smell.

Large Interior Storage Area

You also need to ensure that the bag you are considering purchasing has a large internal storage pocket. The internal storage pockets keep your fly reels, hiking clothes, and electronics out of the rain, and away from your waders. The internal storage pockets also make your job of organizing the gear incredibly easily.

External Storage Pockets

Most bags will have external storage pockets, but they are usually not laid out in optimal locations. Because of this you want to make sure that whatever fly fishing bag you are considering for purchase not only has external storage pockets, but that they are also the right size for your gear, and in optimum locations where you can reach them easily.

Other Accessories

While you are out on the water, different situations will come up, so you are going to want to try to find some of the added accessories that come with fly fishing bags. The first is a portable fly tying bench. The second is a changing mat to help you get out of your rain gear, and into your hiking clothes.
