Fly Fishing Outfit - Buying The Right Gear For The Job

By | Dec 1, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

When it comes to selecting the right fly fishing outfit, there are a few things that you are going to have to consider. If you are a beginner fly angler, you may be overwhelmed at your options, but thankfully, buying the right gear isn't near as hard as it seems. For traveling anglers, as well as saltwater anglers, there is specialized gear that is built just for the type of angling you intend to do, and purchasing a specialized fly fishing outfit will give you the best chances at success on your next day fishing trip or expedition.

For beginners, the labels that you are going to want to look for are the line style, the reel action, and the rod material that was used during construction. On the line, you are going to want to make sure that you are purchasing a double tapered line, as this can easily be replaced, and is the best style of line for beginners to use. Next, you are going to want to make sure the beginners fly fishing outfit includes a single action reel. These types of reels are the most forgiving on new anglers, and allow you to perfect your casting technique without the hassles of higher end multiplier or automatic reels. Lastly, you are going to want to make sure that the rod was built from graphite. Graphite offers beginners a lightweight, but incredibly durable rod that provides a consistent casting action to help beginners learn the proper casting techniques.

If you are on the go, whether for business or pleasure, you are going to want to consider purchasing a travel fly fishing outfit. These are usually built in either a 4 or a 5 piece combination, and come with a hard case to protect the outfit during travel. These cases are highly recommended, and if the outfit you are looking at doesn't include one, either move onto the next available model that does, or think about adding the rod case onto the price of the outfit.

Saltwater angling is a completely different ballgame than catching small 3-4lb fish out of your neighborhood retention ponds or backwoods creeks. Saltwater fish put up extremely long fights, and are known for making anglers work for an hour or longer if their gear isn't properly setup to handle fish this hard hitting. When you are thinking about which saltwater fly fishing outfit to buy, you are going to want to make sure that you are using at least a 5 weight rod to ensure that you aren't wearing the fish down to complete exhaustion, and putting their life at risk. Using gear that is too light for the type of fishing that you are doing is not a recommended catch and release practice, and should be left up to the seasoned anglers that know how to properly fight and land a fish that has been exhausted.
