Why I Love These Handy Bags
Vegetables of all types can easily be steamed in the new Food Steaming Bags that are currently on the market.
These products are a new and wonderful way to prepare fresh vegetables, seafood and poultry without adding any water. The vegetables are tender and ready to serve quickly. Shrimp and poultry are perfect in just a few minutes. Here are some examples of how long it may take to prepare your food.
2 cups of fresh broccoli1 1/2 minutes
2 frozen ears of corn4 1/2 minutes
6 ounces of raw shrimp3 1/2 minutes
8 ounces of frozen chicken7 minutes
I have also experimented with other vegetables. For example, it takes me about 5 – 6 minutes to steam a medium size artichoke in one of the bags. This is far easier than boiling the artichoke in a pot of water for 40 minutes, which was my previous method of preparation. I have found that we now eat fresh artichokes much more frequently, since we discovered these inexpensive bags. I also believe that the artichokes are more nutritious when they haven't been boiled, sitting in water for an hour.
In the freezer section at your grocery store, you can buy frozen vegetables that come in their own plastic bags that you can insert directly from the freezer into the microwave. However, if you want to cook fresh vegetables that you have chosen yourself from your local grocery store or farmer's market, then the quickest and easiest way to prepare them is to use these bags.
In general, I have enjoyed using the food steaming bags, and have found them to be an easy way to add more vegetables to our diet.

Advantages of Using These Cooking Bags
Ziploc is the primary manufacture who sells these specially designed plastic bags that enable you to microwave steam your vegetables, seafood and poultry in their own juices. I have also seen a few off-brand companies that sell them, too.
Personally, I have found these bags to be easy to use. The food steaming bags I have tried make it simpler, and quicker to prepare meals than the old fashioned method of steaming food in a pot on the stove. In addition, steaming vegetables, seafood or poultry in a pot requires you to add a little water, which can dilute the nutrients in the food. The bags do not require the addition of any liquid. The food steams in its own juices. Although any type of steaming is preferable to boiling or frying your food, using these bags is substantially easier, and there is almost no cleanup involved!
Disadvantage of These Bags
The major disadvantage that I have found with the food steaming bags is that you cannot reuse the bags. The manufacturers are concerned that there could be cross-contamination between different food items if you try to reuse the bags. For example, they are concerned that you might cook vegetables in a bag that had been used previously to cook chicken. This has the potential to be unsafe.
The bags are also extremely hot when removed from the microwave. I suggest that you place the bag on a flat plate before placing it in the microwave, since this will make it easier to handle when you remove it from the microwave. In addition, the manufactures recommends that you wait at least one minute before opening the bag.
If you like the concept, but you do not want to throw the bags away each time you use one, you might consider purchasing the microwave food steamer that is advertised at the end of this article.
Food Steaming Bags are a new product that could help many Americans rediscover how easy it is to prepare fresh vegetables, again! This product also makes it quick and easy to prepare chicken and fish. I highly recommend that these bags become another tool in the well-prepared kitchen!
