Foods To Avoid To Stay Healthy - Part 1 of a 2 part series.

According to Calgary Chiropractor Dr. Aaron Cain, knowing which foods damage the nervous system is a new approach to determining which foods are the culprits that should be avoided the most. If you want to have as healthy a functioning nervous system as possible; in addition to regular chiropractic care, these are the top 10 foods to avoid:

#1 Hydrogenated Oils (Trans fats/ artificial fats, olestra)

It has been known by the food industry for over forty years that trans fats are extremely unhealthy. Hydrogenated oils lead to systemic inflammation, cancer, heart disease, hardening of the arteries and hormone imbalances. These oils are man made, very similar in composition to plastic, and block the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, K, and the healthy essential fatty acids (Omega-3).

#2 Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame, Splenda, and Sweet & Low)

All should be avoided. Aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet and many brands of diet soda, is by far the most dangerous. NutraSweet breaks down into methanol, formic acid and formaldehyde. NutraSweet's toxicity mimics autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, and chronic fatigue.

There has been an incredible explosion of people diagnosed with these terrible diseases in recent years. Also, aspartame is a known neurological excitotoxin which means it has the ability to severely damage the brain and nervous system.

#3 Refined Sugar (White sugar products)

Refined sugars are found in about any product that is boxed, bottled, and canned. With no real nutritional value, refined sugar robs your body of vitamins and minerals, and increases oxidative stress on the body leading to chronic disease, such as obesity, cancer, heart disease, stroke and auto immune disorders.

#4 Soda (regular AND diet) and Sweetened Fruit Drinks

Avoiding artificial sweeteners and refined sugars means NO sugary beverages like soda! Loaded with 8 or more teaspoons of sugar or artificial sweeteners, caffeine and phosphoric acid; drinking only 1 can of soda per day has been shown to lead to 10 pounds of excess fat per year! Drinking soda also increases your risk of osteoporosis, leads to excessive sugar intake, hypoglycemia, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, not to mention tooth decay and digestive issues due to the high acid content.

#5 High Fructose Corn Syrup

Found in almost everything packaged or processed! This substance leads to diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Recent evidence suggests that extracting the sweet substance from corn involves the heavy metal mercury which has been linked to autism, severe nerve system disorders, autoimmune diseases, Parkinson's disease, and dementia.

Your health is a matter of the choices that you make in life, just as you choose to change the oil in your car or water your plants, these are choices you make. If you did not change your oil or water your plants your car would break down and your plants would die. Taking control of your health and wellness is the same thing. Taking care of yourself in the areas of physical exercise or movement, our nutritional choices and our mental wellbeing will ultimately dictate the level of health and wellness expressed in your life.

Chiropractic care has been proven to compliment a healthy lifestyle. Your entire life is lived through your nervous system. When we get in a situation where the amount of stress is beyond our bodies ability to adapt, then these stresses begin to interfere with proper nervous system function.

The stresses that cause the problems come from three areas;

Chemical stress: this would include to much sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and of course all the foods mentioned in this article, and not enough fresh fruits, vegetables, vitamins, clean water, etc.

Physical stress: Sitting is one of the worst things that you can do for your spine and causes a tremendous amount of stress on your body when done for long periods of time. Also included are slips and falls, trauma of birth (forceps, suction), contact sports, and postural distortions.

Mental stress: All of the things in our life that consume our thoughts in a negative way, relationships, financial issues, work, etc.

Chiropractic care helps to maintain a properly functioning nervous system putting your body in a better position to deal with the stresses in your life, therefore, making these stresses as least harmful to your health and wellness as possible.
