By Edited Oct 6, 2016 0 0

Many different methods are invented to help smokers quit smoking. Before you begin the withdrawal process, you should seek the advice of a professional. Some of the different methods you can use to quit smoking include cold turkey, nicotine tapering, nicotine gum, and nicotine patches.

Cold turkey means that you stop smoking by using your own will power. If you choose this method, you have to set a date. You have to be prepared to face the withdrawal symptoms. Some people find that going cold turkey is the most effective way to quit smoking. There is only a small percentage of people manage to successfully quit smoking by going cold turkey. The advantage is that you will not suffer from any side effect. In addition, it does not cost you any money. You are not required to go to see the doctor. This is the most challenging method because the withdrawal symptoms will be very severe. You have to be motivated in order to succeed.

Nicotine tapering enables the smoker to reduce the nicotine intake over time. Some people cannot succeed in quit smoking through cold turkey so they choose to reduce the intake of nicotine over time. For example, the smoker can switch to a cigarette with lower amount of nicotine compare to the current brand he is using. In the second week, he can use a cigarette with 60% less nicotine. In the third week, he can switch to a cigarette with 90% less nicotine. Eventually, he will reduce the number of cigarettes he smoke and quit the bad habit completely. It is safe to use the nicotine tapering method. One disadvantage is that the smoker will inhale more smoke and carbon monoxide because of the poisonous gas from the cigarette.

Nicotine gum is used to reduce the withdrawal symptoms caused by nicotine. It is designed for people who cannot resist the temptation to smoke. It is sort of a chewing gum. When using it, make sure you read the instruction and follow it. If you don’t understand the instruction, you can ask the pharmacist who sold it. You are advised to not use more or less than what is prescribed by the doctor. Normally, an average smoker will use 2 mg gum. If you are a heavy smoker, you can use the 4 mg gum. At first, you have to keep on chewing the gum to resist the temptation. When you manage to master your temptation, you can chew the gum less frequently.

Nicotine patch is a plaster treated with nicotine. The smoker will stick the nicotine patch on his skin. Once the plaster is stuck on the skin, the nicotine will enter into the blood in small amount. This is used o reduce the cravings of nicotine in patients that are suffering from withdrawal symptoms. It is safe for people that age above 18 years old. If you are pregnant or have a medical history, you should avoid using the nicotine patch as it can produce side effects.
