In the hottest summer months, free air conditioners for low income families can surely come in handy. In fact, a reliable and working air cooling unit can save your life; especially if you have children or elderly parents in your home.

Did you know that small children and seniors are more susceptible to heat related emergencies, including exhaustion, dehydration and heat strokes? This is why you should never go into the hot summer months wondering if your air conditioning unit is going to survive or if it even works.

There are programs that can help low income families to not only cool their homes in the summer months, but also heat the home in the winter months. And getting a free air conditioner from a state program or agency, really is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to low income family programs or assistance.

Under the LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) run by your state, you can also qualify for insulation services. Did you know that a lot of energy (cool air or heat) can leave the home when not insulated properly? Windows, attics and floor boards are the most likely culprits when it comes to paying more in energy bills.

In fact, some estimate that more than 1/3 of a families living expenses can often go to energy bills. This is unnecessary when a home or apartment space is properly weatherized.

So How Do You Qualify for LIHEAP and other Low Income Family Assistance?

  • First, contact your local state agency which supports LIHEAP (I’ve included a link here). Reference your state and contact that office to see what assistance they can provide. You will need to meet state income guidelines which often vary from state to state.
  • Provide all of the necessary documentation and list out all of the people in your home who may require a free air conditioner due to heath related reasons. This is because if you are disqualified for any reason, you may be qualified for another. Perhaps you have an elderly person in home, which also receives SSI and falls into the income guidelines. That person may qualify even if you do not.

Other Places to Get Cheap Air Conditioners:

Even if you don’t qualify for government assistance with free air conditioning units, you may be able to get a cheap one. There a lot of tips and tricks to actually locate cheap air conditioning units or even free ones.

  • Shop for an air conditioning unit in the off season: The best time to find a low cost unit is during the winter months and coming into the fall. Places like Home Depot often can provide deep discounts during these times. Ask the manager when they start to move air units and put them on sale.
  • Check online for places like Ebay and Amazon during these off seasons as well. You’d be surprised, you may even be able to find an air cooling unit for cheap at these sites as well.
  • Go to Craigslist and do a search on free stuff, sometimes people and businesses will give away free air conditioning units, which is a great deal if you need one and can’t afford it.

As you can see, there are a lot of resources when it comes to free air conditioners for low income families; you only need to be able to look in the right place.
