The arrival of a new baby is an exciting time for any new mother. There are so many things to plan and organize like the bassinet, pram and the babies' first cradle.

Then of course you will have to start buying the diapers and outfits for the baby to wear. Now if you are not a working mother to be and are not lucky enough to have a couple of excited grandparents then you could spend your spare time crocheting for the new baby.

What a great way to spend your time by making all the new baby outfits yourself. Did you say that you had no idea how to do any kinds of craft work? That's okay, because I will explain that it is quite simple for anyone to learn as long as you are willing to try something new. You will be so proud dressing your own baby in the little clothes that you have made with your own hands.

Learning to Crochet

Crochet is not hard to learn, if you start by doing something simple and challenging yourself to learn new stitches once you master the first part creating chains. The picture will show you how to make a chain in more detail.

Creating a chain crochet stitch

You will need

  • 1 crochet hook
  • 1 ball crochet cotton

Start by making a loop, if you are right handed then hold end of yarn in left hand and crochet hook in right. Push the hook through the loop then put yarn round hook and pull back through the loop. You have now created a chain. Practice a few more of these. It wasn't too hard was it?

If you are left handed you need to do this in reverse only with hook and cotton in opposite hands.
