Front Royal is a little town nestled in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. It was formed before the civil war and has many homes and estates from that era still standing. A number of battles were fought here and along the Shenandoah River. Prospect Hill was a famous battle site and is now a cemetery containing a number of those lost during battle.
There are many wonderful outdoor activities in Front Royal. The beginning of Skyline Drive is only a half mile outside of Front Royal. There is Skyline Caverns, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and camping or even hiking the Appalachian trail which runs by Front Royal. There is the Shenandoah (Andy Guest) Park that runs along the river. It has wonderful fishing. The views of the mountains are just beautiful, especially in the fall. The mountains are breathtaking in color.
Wildlife abounds here. There are deer, black beer, fox, groundhogs, mink, beaver, fox squirrels, bobcats and an occasional coyote. A photographer's dream.
If you like to pick your own fresh fruit, there are a number of orchards in the area. You can pick your own apples, pears, strawberries, even your own pumpkin.
There are many little shops and great restaurants locating in town. On the weekends there is a large flea market, where you can find pretty much anything. From antiques to fresh produce grown locally. There are walking tours through many of the historic buildings. There is a lovely park next to the creek that runs though town. Happy Creek is stocked yearly with trout. Life is slower here and it pays to slow down and really look around. It is such a beautiful spot and less than 2 hours from Washington DC. The weekends can be crowded with people coming out for the day, especially in the fall.
