Fun Family Night Ideas - Play Games

N       Name 5 Game – This is a great game that requires you to name 5 things about a particular subject, as directed on the card that was drawn. Hours of fun for a variety of ages; the directions say ages 12 and up. However, in teams, the age could be lower. Play is typically for two players or two teams.

I         Ingenious Game – If you are into strategy games, then this one is for you. A game usually lasts about 45 minutes to one hour. Marketed for ages 10 and up, it is fun for one to four players.

G        Green Eggs and Ham  – This is an amusing game to play with the younger set, and it is recommended for ages four through seven. In addition to being fun, it is also educational. It is designed for two to four players. (This nicely complements the Dr. Seuss “Green Eggs and Ham” book.)

H        Hands Down Game – Hasbro calls it their "game of slap-happy fun." And that is what the six to nine year old players will have, when they play this card game. Three to four people can at a time.

T          Tri-Ominos Game  – Tri-Ominos is marketed for the eight years and older group. It is played with triangular tiles, and the play is similar to Dominos. But the triangles make it a bit more challenging. Fun and educational, too! Tri-Ominos can be played with two to six players.

I         I Spy Memory Game – Is another game that is fun to play, yet helps with developing skills. It can be played several ways, and as the child grows and learns new skills, the game can be played using the more advanced rules. It is suggested for age four and above, but it makes an entertaining game for all. And best of all, up to six people can play.

D         Dominos Game – A game for everyone. Even if you can’t do the 3 R’s you can play with Dominos. As a young child, I remember just matching the dots and making a line with them. Another time, I’d build a small house with them, and of course, it was fun to set them up, and watch them tumble back and down. As I grew, I learned there was an actual game to be played with them. Now, I know there are many games that can be played with Dominos.

E       Everyone’s Favorite – Monopoly – What a game! This is another all-time favorite. Recommended for eight years and older, a younger child can also enjoy this game, with help. So, that makes it an almost perfect pastime, and a most enjoyable way to spend time together. And since two to eight people can play at one time, it can be quite entertaining.

A        Apples to Apples – If you are looking for a game that can be played by a large group, four to ten players, then this is the one. Mattel calls it, “The Game of Hilarious Comparisons.” The suggested age for this game is 12 and older. But Mattel also makes a Junior Version for nine years of age and up.

S          Scrabble Game – This educational and fun crossword game is a marvelous way to spend time. Just be sure to take out a dictionary before your begin, because you will be sure to need it! Two to four players can have a wonderful time matching their word skills. While the traditional game is designed for eight years and up, there are also junior versions for the younger set.

You can’t go wrong with any of the above family night game ideas. And there are many more classic fun board games, which are not listed above. For instance:  Backgammon, Checkers, Chinese Checkers, Cranium, Cribbage, Sorry, Life, and Clue, just to name a few. So, go ahead, pick your favorite, and start the games!

Fun Family Night Ideas - Watch Movies

How about planning a family movie night? Like with the ‘fun family night ideas – play games,’ start the evening off with a meal that is filling, yet fun to make. Pigs-in-a-blanket would be a good choice.

If you have your own shelf of favorite movies, then merely select the ones you want to watch. Or, search your television service provider for the movies they will be showing on your movie night; remember, to select movies that everyone will enjoy. Also, many television service providers offer movies that you can pay to see.

Another option is to rent movies from a neighborhood store or from one of the vending machines.

Watching movies, together, is a great way to spend an evening and one of our favorite family activities. Don’t forget the popcorn!

In Closing

Remember, family night ideas should always include activities that everyone can participate in. If there is a difference in age, and/or skill levels, then maybe a parent, or an older child, can partner with someone younger, so they can join in the fun, too.

Regardless of what you decide to do, for your family night ideas, it is great fun to spend time with your loved ones. And eating meals together is always an excellent way to start or end everyday.

While the above family night ideas are great to play in any season, they are particularly good for those ‘frightful days’ when the weather is bad. For those wonderful days, when the outdoors calls you to come outside and play, then you will want to enjoy outdoor games, like basketball, catch, horseshoes, etc.

Regardless of which of these fun family activities you choose, just be sure to spend quality time with your loved ones. Little ones grow up so fast! I hope these family night ideas will inspire you to set aside one night, regularly, to spend time with your loved ones, have fun, and build memories.

I love this article and the fun family night ideas you present. Monopoly is a favorite game in my family. I have fond memories of playing this game with my mom, when I was a kid. Great for learning, and building, math skills. Anyway, you've inspired me to suggest playing a round of Monopoly with my mom, the next time we have a game night.

Monopoly, Scrabble, and cards are our favorite family night games. Sometimes, when we don't finish a Monopoly game, we just leave it set up and continue it the next night. Thanks for commenting.

The best games help you learn. Great article.

I agree with you Holistic-Health. We purchased the Tri-Ominos game because our daughter didn't like math. We thought if she played with numbers in a game, she would feel more comfortable working with them. And of course, scores needed to be added. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my article.

Glad to see apples to apples on there! We had a blast with that one recently. Also, playing board games with the family is alot less expensive than going out to an arcade or something! Great article!

Thanks Kimmortal1, I appreciate your comment. Apples to apples is fun, and great when you have more people playing. And, as you said, playing games at home is a lot less expensive.

We like to play traditional board games rather than spending all of our night starring at the television. Great article, some good ideas.

Playing games together is another great way to get the family to sit down together. And not only are the games fun, but they are educational, too. Thank you reading and commenting on my article.

For a fun family night idea in winter, we like to play The Wii. We have a great time and are active instead of passive in front of the television.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting on my family night ideas article. I think, regardless of the games you play with your family, it is just being together, having fun together, that makes it special. And I totally agree with you on television.

I like to play Chickenfoot which is a dominoes game. I also have Apples to Apples which I have yet to open. I think I have the same really old edition of scrabble too! Nice article and great ideas on family games to play.
Jan 25, 2012 8:46pm
Thanks for commenting EGreen. I have had that Scrabble game for years, and it has been well used and enjoyed. I wasn't familiar with Chickenfoot, but I looked it up, so hubby and I will give it a try the next time we play Dominoes. You will enjoy Apples to Apples, it is a fun game.
Jan 7, 2012 6:47pm
We enjoy Monopoly and Apples to Apples, but it is also really fun to play a good game of cards. Taking a little time for family fun is so important, especially if you can do something that does not run on electricity or a rechargeable battery for the night.

When it is just my husband and I, we play cards. When others are here, we bring out the board games. That way we don't get tired of just playing one thing all the time.
Jan 17, 2012 9:31am
These are wonderful ideas for family night. You mentioned several games I haven't heard of so I'm going to have to check them out. Always looking for new family games! Thanks!

Wonderful article! Our family used to spend a lot of time putting together puzzles and taking walks when our kids were growing up.
Jun 9, 2012 6:59pm
I appreciate your comment, DD. Where have the years gone? We, too, had fun during those growing up years. In fact we still make time to play games, take walks, and spend as much time together as possible. After all, family is everything.
