It is really important to spend as much time with your kids as possible, especially with our busy parent schedules. Here are great craft activities to do with kids using items from around the home!
Gather all sorts of different pasta such as bow ties, spirals, shells, rice, spaghetti, rigatoni etc. The children can glue these onto a paper plate or cardboard to make wonderful pasta pictures. Add some paint or water paint to make effects over your picture! You could also sprinkle over some glitter or use glitter hairspray to create a shimmer effect.
Make a Book
Depending on the age of your children, they could write and illustrate a short book (perhaps for a younger sibling). Another option is that you could scribe the book for your child and they could paint or draw the pictures.
Hundreds and Thousands Biscuits
Mix up some icing in the colour of your choice, and ice some plain biscuits such as arrowroot biscuits. Sprinkle hundreds and thousands on top. They’re easy to make and delicious!
Uncooked Play dough
2 cups of plain flour
4 tablespoons of 'cream of tartar'
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
2 cups of boiling water
Mix all the ingredients together and knead. As you mix the dough, you will notice it coming together really well. Add other elements such as sand, glitter, or essence to create different varieties of play dough.
These activities are not only fun for the kids, but also develop a variety of different skills such as fine motor skills, literacy, sorting and classifying as well as numeracy, measuring and counting. However, the main goal is that the children are having fun (without the television)!
