Visit Local San Antonio Christmas Attractions

San Antonio is the perfect city to experience Christmas attractions with local influence.  The Mexican and American cultures combined with this city's unique design provide a seasonal experience you will never forget.  San Antonio offers an abundance of tourist attractions year round, and the locals enhance these traditional attractions to celebrate the holiday season with flare.  From the light decorated River Walk Boat Rides to Santa’s Railroad Wonderland, San Antonio provides a holiday treat for everyone in the family.

San Antonio River Walk

Located in downtown San Antonio along the San Antonio River, this city’s most famous attraction shines in the month of December.  The River Walk boasts 120,000 Christmas lights hanging from trees and illuminating the sidewalks and river.  Take a boat ride down the river and enjoy serenades from the carolers, experience the vibrant-colored Christmas decorations, and explore the new 1.3 mile River Walk extension completed in 2009. Buy a piece of Mexicana when you visit the El Mercado shopping area, only five minutes by foot from the River Walk.  Maracas and hand-embroidered dresses are unique gifts for that special someone on your Christmas list.  During the first three weekends of December, observe the Fiesta de las Luminarias featuring 6,000 candlelit brown bags lighting the way for the Holy Family and honoring the tradition.

 Santa’s Railroad Wonderland

Santa’s Railroad Wonderland is located approximately 8 miles north of downtown San Antonio.  The Texas Transportation Museum offers nighttime rides on trains and hayrides decorated with lights during the Christmas season.  This is truly a seasonal highlight you do not want your children to miss. Two adults and up to five children can ride for $30.

San Antonio Rose Classic Holiday Show

If you want to be entertained, the San Antonio Rose Classic Holiday Show is the venue for you.  The holiday show is a relatively new attraction featuring two hours of songs by the 10-member group known as the San Antonio Rose.  Members include local singers, as well as performers from Nashville, Austin, and Branson.  This holiday show is located in the Aztec Theater in downtown near the River Walk. Individual tickets start at $20.

Windcrest’s Christmas Lights

Located 8 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio on Interstate 35, you can view illuminated lights and decorations on hundreds of neighborhood houses in the Windcrest subdivision starting in mid December.  The light decorations are truly stunning and provide free holiday family entertainment.  If you can’t make it to Windcrest prior to Christmas, try to make it before New Year’s, as most homeowners keep their lights up until New Year’s Day.

After-Christmas Show at Mission San Jose

Want to brush up on your Spanish and increase your Christmas spirit?  Just 15 minutes from River Walk, Los Pastores, a Spanish play, features the day after Christmas.  This traditional folk play depicts the shepherd’s journey to view the Christ child. This free event lasts nearly three hours and is portrayed entirely in Spanish.  Even if you do not speak Spanish, you can easily follow the play and enjoy the Christmas message.
