GPS Tracking for Children - What You Need to Know
GPS, also known as global position system, is basically a tracking system that is designed to keep track of a user's location via the use of satellite systems that orbit around the globe. A GPS tracking device is a highly portable piece of equipment which can be easily attached to a a car, person, backpack, etc.
What is GPS tracking for children?
This simply refers to a lightweight tracking device that can be attached to a backpack or clipped onto a person's pants. Some GPS tracking devices for children are worn like watchers or are even attached to the shoes. A GPS tracking device for children will allow parents to easily locate a child who has got lost. It can also be used to help find a child who has been abducted by strangers.
How does GPS tracking work?
The GPS device works on the principle of utilizing satellite-based navigation techniques. There are many satellites used for this purpose which were put into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. The signals emitted are specially coded such that the receivers can obtain the data, process it and distinguish it from other information. There are plenty of GPS satellites that are constantly circling the earth, providing real-time information which is highly accurate. The system is able to take the information from the signal and from there, work out the exact location of the user.
There are many companies which offer such GPS tracking services. To sign up for such a service, parents will need to subscribe to a monthly user service plan and the GPS device is purchased and programmed appropriately. The fees for such GPS tracking services can vary a fair bit. For the GPS tracking to function properly, the tracking device must be attached to the child or kept in the child's possession and always switched on.
What can I find out from the tracking system?
That will depend mainly on what type of tracking service you sign up for. There are some service plans which offer multiple "trackings" on a monthly basis while other plans may offer unlimited amount of trackings. Some may provide you the tracking information through the internet while others may give you the software to do the tracking yourself. Most tracking systems do offer optional reports in which you are able to observe the ongoing activity on the tracking device. Do note that real time tracking is often much more expensive.
Most parents usually use a GPS tracking system to find a child who has lost his/her way. The technology is able to pinpoint the exact location of an individual with astonishing accuracy. Parents can use tracking software to find the location or simply call up the tracking company to quickly determine details of the location.
What are the negatives?
One drawback is that GPS tracking systems for children can be rather expensive. One can expect to pay anywhere from $100 onwards for the device alone. As for the monthly service plans, they can cost between $25 and $100 a month. If you want multiple devices to track several children, you will then have to expect to pay more.
Having said that, GPS tracking devices for children can provide parents with a peace of mind. But some children, especially when they get older, may not want to use the device anymore and they may just simply switch it off. Nevertheless, this device should be regarded as an invaluable parenting tool that is ideal for supervising younger children. However, this device should never substitute good old-fashioned parenting. As a parent, you should always provide sufficient age-appropriate supervision to your children.
