Garage Floor Covering Options

By | Aug 21, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Although the garage is not one of the first rooms of the house that one typically considers when thinking about floor coverings, it is nevertheless important to apply an appropriate covering to the garage floor. Indeed, if no covering is applied to a concrete garage floor, stress cracks can develop in the floor. In addition, weathering and permanent staining (from oil, antifreeze and other automotive chemicals) can occur if a floor is left uncovered. Hot tires can leave rubber marks that are next to impossible to remove from concrete flooring. All of this can easily result in an aesthetically unpleasing problem that can diminish the perceived value of one's home.

However, this problem is very easily prevented by using garage floor coverings. In some cases, an epoxy-based coating is used to cover the garage floor. This coating benefits the consumer for several important reasons.

First, this is an extremely cost-effective option, as it can be applied by the consumer himself. Second, the coating protects the floor against weathering, cracking and chemical stains that would otherwise occur over time. Third, the coating hides imperfections, is easy to clean, and specific cleaning instructions are usually provided to ensure that the floor can be maintained as new-looking for many years. And, fourth, the coating is aesthetically pleasing, as the epoxy coating is available in different colors and shades and can dramatically improve the appearance of the traditional concrete slab garage floor. An epoxy-based coating requires time to dry and cure, so it must be applied when the weather is not wet, during a time when access to the area can be avoided.

Areas must be properly ventilated so that chemical odors are allowed to dissipate. Other garage floor coverings are more technologically advanced, and include polymer based coating systems, decorative chip flooring, and rollable solid flooring products, to name a few. The durability of each of these options varies as does the cost and installation time needed for each. All of these garage floor coverings have one thing in common - they seek to beautify and improve upon the appearance of the boring, gray concrete slab flooring that used to be synonymous with American garages. Many of these coverings will require installation by a trained technician.

Also, in this era of increasing home costs, many individuals have opted to convert their garage space to an office or a workshop. Such homeowners have typically installed garage floor covering that makes their garage area look less like a parking facility, and more like a true extension of the home. Solid flooring products are well-suited for such applications. Such products also give the room a warmer feel and seem to conduct more heat in wintertime than concrete slab flooring does.

For those who are interested in exploring the benefits of garage flooring coverings, there are numerous internet and brick and mortar vendors which specialize in this interesting product assortment. For do-it-yourself types, there are several videos available on the internet demonstrating the proper technique for the application of epoxy-based garage floor covering .
