Garage Springs: The Most Important (And Convenient) Garage Door Parts

By Edited Jun 23, 2015 0 0

Most people don't really think about it, but garages are really cool structures. From their evolution from simple storage structures that housed buggies and horses to the cool automatic garages we currently use is fascinating. But the purpose behind early garages and our modern ones is the same; protect our belongings from thieves and weather, and to have our transportation nearby. Thanks to the inventions of modern garage door parts, we don't have to struggle with opening and closing our garage doors and it also lasts a lot longer.

Out of all the garage door part inventions, garage springs are the most important in my opinion. You've probably never wondered why it's so easy to open your garage door, but springs make it possible. If you're garage has ever experienced operation problems in the past, you know it can be a huge drag to open and close the door. The door sticks when you're trying to close or open it, and makes using your garage incredibly difficult. This applies to both automatic garage door opener parts and garages that you open manually.

Unfortunately, garage springs don't receive the necessary attention needed to avoid malfunctioning before their supposed to. A simple 30 minute check-up every 6 months will prevent a very expensive repair bill in the future and keep your garage working great for years to come. Maintenance goes a long way towards preserving the lifespan of your springs and keeping the contractor at bay.

If you've owned your garage for more than 3 years, you should check your garage springs immediately. Nothing major. Just make sure that everything is in good working order. The parts are clean and lubricated, and none of the coils are cracked. If everything is working well, you won't have to check on it for another 9 to 12 months.

Finding replacement parts for a garage door is no easy task and finding the right springs is even more difficult. Its not like your local hardware store keeps things like this in stalk for each different type of garage door. In most cases if a garage door spring breaks the owner may have to replace the entire door unless they know where to look for a new set of springs. Its important to know that you should not just replace one if it looks like one is going to break or if one has broken, you really should replace them both. It might surprise you to know that there are many websites out there where you can find replacement springs and other such replacement parts for your garage door!

One of the most painstaking things to do is finding garage replacement parts. And finding the right springs are even harder. Most local hardware stores don't have a wide variety of garage springs in stock if yours breaks. More than likely, if your spring breaks, you'll be replacing not only your garage springs but also your the entire door system.

When you determine that you need to replace a faulty spring, make sure to replace both of them. If you just change the one that was damaged, the other spring that wasn't replaced will breakdown very quickly. Now that's a pain. You'll have to go through the replacement process all over.

There are wide range of websites and retailers out there that specialize in garage door springs. Or, you can head down to a major hardware store and see what they have in stock and order from their product catalog.
