Should you get a Metal Work Bench - If you have finally decided to treat yourself to a new bench, since the one that came with the house, looks like something from the turn of the century, and you are not sure it could hold anything, other than the few dusty planter pots that were left sitting on it, then get rid of it and get yourself a new one.
But what type to get? Do you get wood? Or do you get a metal one?
You will first have to decide what type of work you will be doing in this space you are setting up. Will it be for woodworking and similar hobbies, or will you be tearing apart motors and greasy parts?
If you are going to be tearing apart greasy car parts or motors, then a metal one may be the better way to go. They are easier to clean afterwards, and are heavy duty. Many of them come with steel drawers and are easy to put together upon delivery.
The ease of this style, is that there is no wood to cut, and put together, no plans to follow, just metal pre cut pieces. You can also get them to match your roll away tool boxes, if you are looking for a custom look in your garage.
But what about if you already own a heavy duty wood bench, that you don't even want to try and move. The type that was most likely built right in that spot in your garage and now it is put together, it would take a team of mules, to move it? You can consider covering the surface with metal.
Get a piece of metal cut to size and attach it to the surface of your heavy duty one, instantly turning it into a heavy duty bench with the metal surface. Or, you can also get industrial plastic sheeting that can be secured to the surface so the surface is even and for ease of cleaning afterwards.
Both of these are good quality, it is more of the type of use this me
tal one will get. A car hobbyist, would most likely choose a metal surface to work on over a wood one.

Or you can research locally for a metal supplier that would cut a piece of metal to size to attach to your old wood one. This is a great way to update the look of a old beast of a work table, especially if you are trying to create a custom interior in your garage for you to work in.
This is a great way to save money. If the bench is solid and going no where, but the top has seen better days, with pitting and grease, then just cover it. This is a great way to create a clean and flat surface for smaller hobbies. Plus it can be cleaned.
Lets face it, if you bought your house and the old beast of a bench was left with it, but it is not rickety and looks like it has stood the test of time, and it is in a OK spot, then why spend money you don't have to? Just upgrade it with a brand new metal top? This way you turn it into a workshop instantly.
There are many options when it comes to your garage workshop. You can get portable ones, heavy duty wood ones, you can design and make your own, or you can purchase a new metal work bench.
